As a new member to the forum (long time lurker), I felt it was only fitting that I add some sort of value to the forum before building Fort Knox with all the post here. I don’t feel qualified as of yet to address creating successful businesses, but I do believe there is a direct correlation between sports psychology, an area where I am very well experienced in, and business psychology. Much like products, the formula for success never changes, only its packaging. And with that I present... Drum-roll please...
How A Simple Idea Can Change Your Life Forever
“When you change your thinking, you change your beliefs;
When you change your beliefs, you change your expectations;
When you change your expectations, you change your attitude;
When you change your attitude, you change your behavior;
When you change your behavior, you change your performance;
When you change your performance, you change your LIFE.”
-Dr. Walter D. Staples
No, this is not a product idea, or a business idea. Ideas of self worth, self perception, and mindset are much more important than ideas. As we all know, business ideas are worthless without action. What is action and how does it happen is the more important question. What drives our being to take that first step and each continuous step towards our goals? Put your seat belts on kiddos. Here we go!
P-T-F-E-A
When I first learned the PTFEA model, I dubbed it “The Inception Model.” I believe the movie nailed the concept right on the head: a simple seed can manifest itself into an all-consuming idea if allowed to grow. These ideas in turn control our thoughts, feelings, emotions, and eventually our actions, for better or for worse. By learning to identify the major aspects your belief and value systems, you can take control of your own destiny. It all starts from within! Mindset is key as performance has a direct correlation to state of mind.
Programming Controls Your Thinking
Thoughts are governed by two main systems in the brain, the Belief System and the Value System. “Tyler! What’s the difference between the two!?” I am so glad you asked! As I say, an open mind is welcomed with an open heart. The Belief System is a collection of ideas and convictions that an individual holds to be true regardless of factual evidence. These are a series of views on the world that are created from what we perceive over long spans of time and eventually create opinions on issues such as sexism, racism, morals, ethics, equality, etc...
The Value System on the other hand are far more intangible concepts that stem from our belief system. Concepts such as integrity, honor, loyalty, and other concepts that we deem important. These values govern the way we interact and communicate with others around us.
“Why are you even talking about this? I know who I am!?” you say? Another good point. In the world of entrepreneurism, conviction can make or break a business. Steve Jobs believed the difference between successful and unsuccessful entrepreneurs was largely based on perseverance, a value. This value stems from the unwavering belief that your product will make somebody’s life better.
In my humble opinion, success is a reflection of a person’s belief about themselves. Regardless of whether it is sports or business, there is always the defining questions you must ask yourself. Are worth X amount of success? Are a champion? Are you an entrepreneur? Is my time worth the same as this multi-billiondollar company’s CEO’s time?
Hell to the Yes! But you will have to ask yourself these questions. Self-awareness is paramount in your success not only as an entrepreneur, but a fulfilled human being. Be honest and open with yourself and dig deep to find what needs improvement. If you can build them, we can fix them.
Happy Hunting. Bachooo!
Part 2 coming in the near future.
