Hello,
I am trying to enter the world of Fastlane!... I think I have a half decent idea and I know that I can build a decent product, but my huge worry comes in the form of marketing my idea.
So.. a little about me. I am 33, married, two kids and trapped in the mundane world of employment. I work as a science teacher (so my time trade isn't quite 5/2 as I get a hell of a lot of holidays... its probably closer to 1/1 which is better than most I guess)
So my business idea is to use what I am good at... teaching science. I have a wealth of experience in this area and the kids I teach have great results.
So rather than do something utterly new I am going to use this as the basis of my business.
Setting up an online course for anyone, but mainly aimed at high school students (again mainly in the UK, but realistically anywhere) to study with.
It will be a complete curriculum of about 150 videos explaining all of the key concepts they need to do well in science.
Each video will have resources attached to them, tasks to complete etc.
Videos will be broken down into topic and will flow in a cohesive way, rather than being piecemeal which a lot of the stuff I have seen on youtube and the rest of the internet seems to be.
I am also designing a number of (safe) experiments that can be completed at home, replacing lab chemicals with things that are already in the home or can be picked up cheaply.
Obviously there is a hell of a lot of work that is going to go into this.
But I am making good progress with the videos, and my wife is a musician so we have professional level recording equipment to make the voice overs good.
She is also very good at webdesign.
SO... I know the execution of the product itself will be good. I know I can do things a lot better than the free stuff out there. I know I can do stuff a lot better than the "big" textbook providers and traditional educators.
(There are other aspects to the business too, but for brevity which I am clearly lacking I won't go into full details)
What I am worried about is that I could have the best product in the world (it probably won't be) but that I have no idea how to get anyone to see the product to be aware of or to buy into it. I feel totally out of my depth when it comes to the marketing side.
Any ideas suggestions would be so gratefully appreciated!
