Getting a Job in Investment Banking

For those of you who have jobs in investment banking, how hard was it to get a job? I will be going to a target school next year to study commerce. My friend's brother went to the same university and got a job at Goldman Sachs. If i get accepted to this university, what are the chances of getting a job in investment banking? And what can I do to differentiate myself?

What did your friend's brother tell you?

@Raoul Duke Gracias Amigo.

It's competitive, but you can do it. I worked at Bulge Bracket (Merrill, GS, MS). Do these things and you'll be ahead of your peers:
  • Get a 3.5+ GPA. Don't even bother trying with something lower.
  • Join the free WallStreetOasis forums and start reading threads daily.
  • Join several extracurricular activities that help tell a good story about you.
  • Order the "Vault" practice guides for interviews and get to work now.
  • Read the Wall Street Journal once every few days. Just the major stories and ones that interest you.
  • Gray or Blue suits. Never black. Black is for funerals.
  • White or light blue shirts. No silly "shouty" neckties.
  • Learn to love kissing a$$.
If you really really really want to go into bulge bracket IB... be prepared to do 60-80 mock interviews (20 minute practice interviews with IB based questions) during your sophomore year; and do well in school. You will need to apply sophomore summer for junior year internship... so try to snap up good non-banking internships/jobs freshman and sophomore year summers, to make your story look even better.

That blog has a wealth of information on working on Wall Street. The authors are aligned with the fastlane philosophy, so you won't go wrong by reading their material.
