Hey Fastlaners,
I’d love some perspective from the community.
I’m a waste management consultant with 3 years of experience - involved more in the technical side of things which I'd like to shift away from and go more into the communications/behavioural change side of things. I’ve worked with some big names in the international agency space whilst working in a consultancy, but now I’m fully on my own.
What I'm trying to build:
How can I make at least £40k freelancing/consulting in this space and avoid having to go back to employment?
If anyone here has experience scaling a consulting business (especially in niche technical fields), I’d love to hear:
Nicole

I’m a waste management consultant with 3 years of experience - involved more in the technical side of things which I'd like to shift away from and go more into the communications/behavioural change side of things. I’ve worked with some big names in the international agency space whilst working in a consultancy, but now I’m fully on my own.
What I'm trying to build:
- I want to make my waste management freelancing profitable and sustainable, but I’m a bit scared and lost as to how to grow it.
- On one hand, I think about going back into employment to build my knowledge base and confidence before “going all in.” But on the other hand, I know what this community will probably say about that…
- International consulting in this field is no joke-you really need to know your stuff, and I’m still finding my feet. Sometimes I worry I don’t know enough yet.
- Finding more clients and getting my name out there.
- Learning how to package myself and my services in a way that’s clear and valuable.
- Avoiding burnout. This industry is intense. I’ve already burned out multiple times from the workload and difficult clients—all while making a pittance that I couldn’t survive on.
How can I make at least £40k freelancing/consulting in this space and avoid having to go back to employment?
If anyone here has experience scaling a consulting business (especially in niche technical fields), I’d love to hear:
- How did you find your first real clients?
- What’s the best way to position yourself when you’ve got some experience but are still building confidence?
- Would you double down on freelance now, or go back into employment for a few years to sharpen your skillset?
