Found my niche and competitors, next step before jumping in?

After a few days of brainstorming I think I found my niche and I am definitely willing to put all my effort into building a website now, it targets one of my areas of interests and I cant think of a better idea, I think I have a potential here but I know from the start it wont be easy.
I will be focusing on a content for now, starting a blog, there is a possibility of me writing ebook in a future and manufacturing my own product, both targeting my audience and related to blogs content, which is great imo. The best part is, I really think I will bring some value here with my work and dedication.
I have some questions. How can I properly evaluate my market and competition? I found one site that brings 30-40k unique visitors (I think I can produce better content, unique, etc.) the other website is more broad and brings 250K unique visitors per month, but I am not too worried about it because I will specialize in a certain area. I dont see them selling any products besides content, should be a plus, right? Hopefully its reliable information.
Before I buy domain and hosting, I really would like to do some more research and see if its worth it jumping into it. How can I do that? I just want properly evaluate my competition and the market. Any info is greatly appreciated.
