You haven't identified a plugin to use yet? It's been 4 days since you posted this thread. Don't let a very simple plugin slow you down. Do a google search, search codecanyon.net, something but don't let this day pass without buying what you need.

I found one called optinskin. I am spending my day writing articles and doing seo on the site.

That's $20 more than popupdomination. I'm curious why you decided on optinskin vs the other.

I would not think this is productive for a early stage startup.

What key partnerships can you make that will help drive consistent traffic?

Where are your customers right now and how can you get them to pre-sign up for your new startup ?

I use Contact Form 7 (https://wordpress.org/plugins/contact-form-7/). I guess it is not created to easy email collection, but it works great for me and it could be also use as a contact form. You can create any form you want.
You can also try out http://wordpress.org/plugins/mail-subscribe-list/ or http://wordpress.org/plugins/easy-sign-up/
I didn't use them by myself, though.

Wordpress game means a lot of trying and comparisons. There is a huge amount of free or paid plugins in almost every possible area. Have a try, all plugins are super easy to uninstall.

I actually have not purchased either yet. I currently have 0 traffic flowing to the site so my main priority is content and seo

I currently have 0 customers and 0 partnerships.

I am building a wordpress blog/ info site. My plan is to provide people with info and guidance to solve their problem. After they get value from the site I plan to try to capture emails and sell them a book on the back end which will be a site that I have not built yet.

I think the most important thing I can be doing right now is building quality content and then trying to figure out how to get people to the site to read and enjoy the content.

I would take a free plugin until I get some traffic and validate the idea. The key is to collect emails so I would not bother much about which plugin to choose. All it has to do is to work correctly. If free one has some limitations, I will change it later.
