Fastlane business and a job together?

Anything considered a "hustle" and not necessarily a CENTS-based Fastlane

Hi Everyone,

MJ, I read your books, they are awesome..
I will be finishing my engineering this summer and will be looking for a job. I want to do a job to gain some experience, it is essential. But I am also very much interested to start my own app, because I also have some good ideas and personality to do it. My question is, has anybody pulled off such stunt before? A job plus fastlane startup (let's say 3 days a week)? If I start doing it, does anyone have tips for me? your experience? by the way, I live in Germany, so I have a little more time than other engineers in the world (as far as what I have heard about working conditions).

Aish

Welcome to forum Aish!

You definitely can go route you describe.
You don't have to starve in order to create successful app.

And having regular income will give you more freedom
in developing them (since you mentioned you have a few)
and less stress over budget.

Some people work and do side-to-fastlane switch when
side project brings bigger income than their salary.

Hope you'll stay around and good luck!

Thanks for the reply, After reading in different places where 'undivided attention for a successful startup is essential' was a little scary to me, I mean how can everyone do that?
Would you suggest how should I optimize my efforts? I barely have experience in one job and I am planning to do two

That's one of myths.

Some people don't like Mark Zuckerberg but i will use him as an example below:

When facebook was getting traction in very early days, Mark was mainly working on something totally different - "a file sharing website".
He thought that file sharing will be next best thing and he was actively building it
while facebook was kind of a side project.

Having that in mind and your question:
Would you suggest how should I optimize my efforts?
I would suggest to try few different simple apps with no "expiration date".
People often throw everything they have onto one app and get burned out or they kill project after first attempt b/c it didn't fly right of the bat.

What successful people mostly do is attempting quite a few times before they succeed.

So create different apps or even different approaches to same idea of an app.
If or when you're find something that people will use, then you can pay more attention to it or decide to focus solely it.

That would be all.

Isn’t the “grinding after work” the message that everyone is sharing everywhere?

I mean, unless you have the capital required for the business & your expenses, what’s the alternative?

The funny thing is that file sharing WAS the next big thing.

Both ideas were and are equally valid.

Execution is EVERYTHING - forget about having a special idea (for the most part).
