"Downgrading" from Color 1.0 To simple black and white 2.0?

Hello, one of my main websites is really nice to look at, however I've noticed that the cooler I make it look the less people actual use it on a day to day basis. My target crowd is 21-35 and I deal in information.

When I was started the web site was a simple black and white site with a template, and it was received way better. What I'm wondering is what do you guys think about a black and white website with a 2.0 feel?

Is it too simple? Not enough color? The only colors that will be on the website will be"Gold" to highlight the premium content, and the social networking badges.
