Documentary - profitability / funding?

Ok, so a friend of mine is really keen on making documentarys, which I think is awesome. But I wondered if anyone here has any experience or insight into first of all commercial viability of this, and second how one would go about getting funding etc?

I am thinking it's worth him approaching something like Discovery Channel or something and try to talk to someone there about the idea and if someone like them would be interesting in purchasing the documentary once its made or something, but I really have no knowledge of how this sort of TV stuff works. Any suggestions would be appreciated
