I'm the one you'll notice lurking in the background writing notes and testing new ideas to see what happens.

It's rare that you will see me in the spotlight, but I figured I should start being more vocal with what I have learned over the past ten years and become more focussed.

More about me

I first read MJ's book a few years ago and got a chewing from him for asking a silly question.

Since then, I have read the book often and listen to the audio book every month or so (I have it on my phone as I write this).

I have been building websites for around 14 years now, mainly for clients as a hobby.

I have realised that exchanging time for money wasn't serving me well and wanted to focus on creating assets and residual income rather than having to take direct orders from employers.

I have only made this shift in the last two years and things are slowly piecing together.

The timeline is not to dissimilar to the following.
  1. Learned how to build html/css websites
  2. Spent 5 years learning php/mysql whilst working full time.
  3. Spent 2 years staring blankly at javascript (and still don't know what I am looking at).
  4. Learned about affiliate marketing and failed miserably to stick to one project - therefore not really making too much money.
  5. Found out about longtail keywords and how to direct traffic organically.
  6. Realised that building digital products once and selling 1000+ times over was better than exchanging time for money.
  7. Found out about PLR content and digital products.
  8. Found out how cheap it was to hire writers after staring at a blank microsoft word document for days on end and after realising PLR was not of high enough quality.
  9. Realised how important SCALE was.

I am now picking snippets of information from Flippa sales comments on how these sites earn money and generate traffic, as well as picking through FLF & BHW for other snippets and testing these methods on my own projects.

My Failed Business Ideas

Remember I mentioned that I struggle to stick with one project? I suffer badly from shiny object syndrome and chase trinkets instead of nurturing and developing a proven system.

Some examples of my failed business ventures are as follows.

1. MMS (multimedia message) business for estate agents (before the internet was available on mobile devices).
2. Part time web design company - got fed up with chasing money from clients (but still have a few clients on the books).
3. Online penny auction website - I had no idea how to drive traffic to the site.
4. Local service directory (I still have this great looking website but no traffic - kind of like having a ferrari in the Sahara desert).
5. Urban exploration forum - circa 900 members within 1 year and #2 forum at its peak.
6. Youtube blog for fishing (which still exists and drives a small amount of traffic to my fishing blog).
Don't get me wrong though, I was happy to failed as most of these as each of them taught me something that made the next project better.

My Current Projects

I have turned my attention to building blogs and earning (tiny amounts) via multiple revenue streams per website such as affiliate products, downloadable digital products, ad revenue etc.

  1. Local service directory / membership site - as mentioned above.
  2. Job interview website - Q&A based website.
  3. Carp fishing blog (with FB page circa 2200 members).
  4. Sport technology and exercise blog.
  5. Construction engineering blog.
  6. Kindle publishing blog.
  7. Membership site - Fishing diary software for anglers.
  8. Ebook writing (I will be publishing my first book in the next week or so)
My main focus is building content and organic search results for each of the above.

I would also like to develop a kindle portfolio to learn more about self-publishing.

My Goals

I am very successful at my (self employed) full time job, but my full time job involves exchanging money for time (in an industry I don't really have any interest in anymore) which I would like to start moving away from.

I am moderately well paid for my full time job and I am now starting to invest my cash into my online ventures to see if I can finally earn enough residual income to cover my bills and become financially free with what I have learned.

In Summary

It is about time I took this shit seriously.

I will be developing my current assets and look to generate monthly revenue from each.

I will keep this thread up-to-date and would appreciate the input from this forum, whilst hoping others learn from my journals to save them valuable time with their projects.

If you have read this far, then I salute you! I could talk for hours on this.

If you have any questions, please ask away.

Warmest Regards,
Cavking

I am currently concentrating on the fishing website, but still want to build eBooks to dabble in that side of things. I sometimes feel like the fishing blog has a limited audience, but that could just be my mind doubting itself.

I suffer from the shiny object syndrome too. I finally decided to devote to one project and man, what a difference. Remember, monogamy over polygamy

You're approaching the whole thing the wrong way. You have to think about what your fishing audience ALSO does. Many people who fish probably do other stuff outside like hunting, camping etc and are DIY guys. Also, probably a highly passionate audience. If you cross-promote smartly on a couple of closely related websites, you can sell those people a lot more stuff than fishing hooks. Read up on digitalmarketer.com about their survivallife and DIY "blogs".

Your projects are all over the place. Focus.

Both coasts. The west now.
I agree on the focus part, but in saying that know I have that problem as well.

Anyhow, something that immediately jumps off the page for me is with some of your ventures you needed a way to drive traffic/SEO to your website/blog/etc.

Seeing how you know how to build websites, why not offer that as a trade?
Just an idea

Thank you for the reply and the URL.

My fishing site is targeting carp fishing for beginners and currently has blog posts and vlogs that I created to help beginners learn how to get started.

My intention was to adjust the blog to have main pillar articles explaining what equipment they need, what skills they need to learn, how to catch, etc. Making the site almost a step-by-step guide solely for beginners starting out. For each of the pillar articles, link them to particular Amazon affiliate products and show them which to choose. I would then write further "blog posts" to generate organic traffic. This site receives approx 1000 visitors per month with around 5000 page views per month from organic traffic.

On the pillar articles, I would have an opt-in list that allows them to download the pillar articles as a pdf guide and capture their email addresses. (an idea I got yesterday from this site).

With the email addresses, I will send autoresponder series that offers a beginners carp fishing book that I have written and follow that up with more eBooks relating to the subject (the books will be sold via amazon and purchased via affiliate links) and recommended fishing products. The books will also have affiliate links to particular products that the reader are advised to buy. I would also upsell and advanced fishing guide for those who feel they are ready to move up a notch and start buying more expensive products in the £500+ range.

To support the main website, I have purchased two further domain names and set up the basic backbones of the websites (templates, plugins etc), but there is currently no content as I was focussing my efforts on creating the fishing book.

The next site will solely be fishing product reviews with amazon affiliate links, but not just for carp. The site will serve sea, river, fly fishing, etc - hopefully allowing me to branch out to other types of fishing, but ultimately being the middleman scraping as much useful data on each product and putting it in one place for visitors to compare products. This site will also have comparison charts for each of the categories, but also blog posts to capture traffic via organic search and links from the other websites and eBooks to push the visitors around my sales funnel.

The third supporting site will be solely offering fishing tips as blog posts, but again for different types of fishing, but this site will be the host for other eBook series for each of the different types of fishing, again allowing me to branch out.

I use SEMRUSH and LONGTAIL PRO for competitor analysis and to find keywords with volume, I then analyse each ranking page from the competitors site, do a better job with the content by linking to videos, displaying images and illustrations and being more thorough with the content, this is generally how I generate traffic.

The main reason I don't focus on one site is shiny object syndrome, but having a few sites allows me to create content and schedule the content to be released on a regular basis. It also allows me to sell the sites as a package once my interests turns to other subjects.

So, to summarise;

This is how my projects currently stand.

These are on hold until further notice;
  • Local service directory / membership site - as mentioned above.
  • Job interview website - Q&A based website.
  • Sport technology and exercise blog.
  • Construction engineering blog.
  • Kindle publishing blog.
  • Membership site - Fishing diary software for anglers.

These are my focus;
  • Ebook writing;
  1. Beginners fishing guide to be published
  2. I have another eBook I have written which explains how I build websites, generate traffic etc. This is a week away from being published - this will be a series which will be created from what I have learnt while studying internet marketing and web building.
  • Carp fishing blog for beginners (with FB page circa 2200 members).
  • Supporting fishing product review site
  • Fishing tips website to broaden the audience.

I am great with starting new ideas and projects, I enjoy this side of things, but then slow down after a couple of months and lose focus.

Anyhow, something that immediately jumps off the page for me is with some of your ventures you needed a way to drive traffic/SEO to your website/blog/etc.

Thank you for the reply.

Last year, I made contact with one of the leading carp anglers in the UK, he is on TV most weeks and works with some of the biggest fishing brands in the UK - he has a large following (5000 friend on FB, 14000 followers on FB and 15000 twitter followers). I have his phone number and contact him regularly.

I was in the process of building a website for him and have him promote my membership site as a trade, but my full-time job went through a main phase of works (I am a construction manager for a tunnelling company) and this got in the way. Although this is still a viable option and an ace I have up my sleeve once I have something to present to him.

He has other contacts in the industry too, which I can use to my advantage once I develop a relationship with him and prove I can earn money for him.

I have also explained the process of affiliate sales and digital content sales to him which he can offer to his followers, both in which he was very interested in learning more and willing to partner up with me, again, another ace up my sleeve once I have the backbone of my personal sales funnel in place.

I need to make sure my own infrastructure and backend is in place before my invitation to JV with these "celebs".

My aim is to build up the blog to a respectable volume of traffic and then branch out, but in the mean time offer guides and eBooks while building an email list. I think this needs to be my focus.

My current mindset is that digital products are a good way of earning revenue when the volume of traffic is small. Once the traffic is higher, affiliate revenue and ad revenue should see an increase.

Anyone agree or disagree?

I've read all your posts in this thread but other than you focussing on one site (which is actually three) and posting about how to get started Carp Fishing (information which is freely available) I am struggling to see what the need is that you are going to meet.

If I was being ultra-brutal I would say phrases like "My aim is to build up the blog to a respectable volume of traffic and then branch out" and "To support the main website, I have purchased two further domain names and set up the basic backbones of the websites (templates, plugins etc), but there is currently no content as I was focussing my efforts on creating the fishing book." make me think you are just spinning your wheels because you don't actually know yourself what need you are meeting.

I don't think 'fishing' has a limited audience but I think you need to look at what value you are actually providing as I think if it is just a blog, vlogs and ebooks of easily available info and Amazon affiliate links then you will struggle.

Hi all,

So I have reservations about the particular subject as a lot of the information is freely available as mentioned above. But I have a nice audience, I am able to create content about the subject and I feel that the level and clarity of the information can be greatly improved.

As also mentioned above, the audience can be catered for in many different verticals and a wide range of subjects are available to expand on.

I would like to see how far I can push this site and the products as I feel like I am on the right track. I just need to concentrate.

I have good connections in the fishing industry and can reach out to them for JV deals.

Carp fishing has turned into a very competitive and commercialised sport, it is featured on TV throughout the week in the UK and is very popular in Europe. But this has lead to a very profitable sport as the angling companies have manufactured a mass of products for the market in recent years.

There are huge websites in this industry, but these websites become very cluttered and in turn, makes it difficult for beginners to piece the information together.

So the plan is to create easy to follow information, provide new anglers with detailed information on how to be successful when fishing and guide them through to advanced fishing and other aspects of fishing.

I want to build out the three websites, beginners guide, tackle reviews and fishing tips to capture a broad audience, while still being able to serve particular needs. I will figure out which is more profitable and then outsource the content once I know what works and what parts of the business brings in the money. Each site will be created to support the other sites.

My major targets are as follows and will be broken down into manageable chunks in following posts to this thread.

Beginners-Website - to sell the beginners guide and generate subscribers.
1) Fix my current theme as it has broken since the 4.2.2 wordpress update.
2) Remove all other distractions such as adsense, as the don't earn anything with the low volume of traffic I receive.
3) Create Pillar Articles to be featured as a "Start here" section on the website.
4) Create Leadpage opt-in's for each of the articles to build a list.
5) Create a Beginners Guide and Publish on Amazon etc.
6) Create more training videos to explain the step-by-step process and link to individual affiliate products.
6) Build an autoresponder list to guide the subscribers through what equipment they need and why (using links to posts/videos and use affiliate links).
7) Promote the guide to the subscribers.
8) Drive pay-per-click facebook ads to the book and look into affiliate JVs.

Tackle Reviews - to provide tackle reviews, generate affiliate revenue and capture subscribers.
1) Create top 10 list posts and link them to individual reviews (with affiliate links) to capture organic traffic.
2) Drive traffic using the Beginners website opt-in list to individual reviews and lists.

Fishing tips - to sell digital products and mini-courses to subscribers and capture subscribers.
1) Upload fishing tips content to the site, covering a more broad audience.
2) Create targeted opt-in list for the different interests and create lead pages to capture email addresses.
3) Create an autoresponder list to drive traffic to the tackle review site.
4) Create multiple mini-courses and ebooks.

Any thoughts greatly welcomed.

I will follow up with a more detailed to-do list.

Content is the key. Search engines now need unique content for every business. Blogging is in demand. Am sure expecting an immediate windfall is not right.Build your community strongly. Ensure people await for your next post or update. The passionate reader base you get will better revenue.
If you can take some time out of your schedule, why not freelance for an IT MNC? The reason I told this is, they pay really well.

2) Create targeted opt-in list for the different interests and create lead pages to capture email addresses.
3) Create an autoresponder list to drive traffic to the tackle review site.
4) Create multiple mini-courses and ebooks.

I fixed the theme, which was hard work - but with a little bit of luck and a lot of trial and error, I got there in the end.
I removed adsense as it wasn't really earning anything and was just cluttering up the website - plus none of the ads were actually ever relevant.
I removed a few other distractions such as an additional "Similar posts you might like" - I had two of these on there for some reason.
I did some work on the facebook page, schedule 20 posts and one sponsored post for an article I wrote with affiliate links - I now have 2217 likes on that particular page. I also uploaded this article to Pinterest and submitted the URL to google.

It is anticipated that I need four pillar articles to cover the information I believe the beginners require to get started, which will also have affiliate links to amazon products and suitable videos embedded from Youtube. I plan to have these in a ready to be published state by Tuesday next week. These are to act as the main guide for the beginners and the starting point for visitors new to fishing.

I will also be offering these pillar articles as downloadable PDF's as they are going to be rather large, which can be acquired by signing up to my list via leadpages. So I will be signing up to lead pages this week.

I have attached my stats for Facebook.

Couple of my friends carp fish and they spend a lot of money on their hobby. Its definitely a niche with potential. Would you say SemRush is worth paying for? Does it offer value on Longtail keywords that cannot be obtained elese where?

ps I might need to read your blog, my friend keep trying to get me to come fishing with him but I dont have a clue!

Just so you know, the website is pretty slow in responding to requests.

Is carp any good, anyway? I live near the sea, I fished everything there is to fish here, never tasted carp though. Not a popular fish in Italy.

Hi Jambla.

SEMRush is worth every penny, I have learned a trick recently with it that should accelerate me in the right direction with finding new profitable niches. I use it in conjunction with Longtail pro and MOZbar as well as a few other tools, but the insight it gives you is incredible.

I would be interested to hear what you think of the site. Www.beginners-carp-fishing.co.uk

Fishing has a huge potential, but getting the traffic is proving to be an uphill battle.

I redesigned and rebuilt the site in January as I managed to delete it from the server. Before I deleted the site I was getting 4000 pageviews per month and the site was running for a year. I has been 5-6 months since the rebuild and I am now surpassing the 4000 pv/pm with the new site.

I have been using SEMRush to look at my competitors keywords, finding the pages and keywords that have a decent amount of searches, then analysing their content, writing a clearer more precise article, adding videos etc and then building links via pinterest, yahoo answers, quora etc.

SEMRush allows my to see the competitors backlinks which I can look to get links to my site. I will then go through each competitor in the top ten for each keyword and do the same.

With regards to cost of carp fishing, if I can get in between the buyer and amazon I should be on to a commision.

Carp rods x2 £50-£200 each
Carp reels x3 £50-£300 each
Net and handle £40
Line, hooks, leads, scissors, tackle box, rod pod or banks sticks etc £100-£200
Bivvy or shelter £100-£800
Bed £80-£300
Sleeping bag £50-£250
Other overnight items such as lights, camping grill, plates etc £100+
Holdalls £25-£100
Wheel barrow £50-£400
Bait boat £300-£1000
Bait £5-£30 each session.

I have missed loads out, but this give you an idea.

All of these items get replaced to out-do friends as ego is a huge part of carp fishing.

Most experienced anglers will be using rods that are at least £300 each, reels that are at least £200 each, bivvys at least £500. Which all get replaced every 3 years or so.

There is quite a bit of potential, but I am still working on getting to the tipping point for the site.

I still think about selling the site at least once a week and move on to a new project, but I think a few more tweaks and a lot more content and user interactions should get me closer to the tipping point.

We don't eat in the UK, catch and release only. I think its more of a Polish delicacy as it is a bottom feeder and our waters in the UK are quite muddy.

The website can certainly use a few speed tweaks.

My friend bought an estate car just so he could fit all his fishing gear in. The amount of stuff he takes fishing is ridiculous! He was telling me the other day he was looking at buying a £400 bivvy, they must have a huge markups!

A £400 bivvy and I bet he already has an expensive bivvy that is in perfect condition! That's what draws me to carp fishing as a niche.

The big tackle companies have made the industry huge in only a few years and I can't see it going away - it's slowing moving to the USA which give a whole new push for the website when it take off over there.

Most carp anglers are all about ego, looking good and having the best equipment on the bank - this is obvious by the fact that carp anglers catch fish, take of photo of themselves with a fish, then let the fish go! It's a fish!!

I had the same problem as far as shiny object syndrome. I finally realized that I was so busy trying to make a different things work, that I wasn't accomplishing anything at all. Now I am focused on two ventures and it's going to stay that way until I reach my financial goals. Best of luck.
