Hey Fastlane Forum,
I’m looking for insight, guidance, and honest feedback on a tech business I’m building — specifically whether I should design it as a desktop platform, website, or both, and whether I should manually code it myself or leverage AI-assisted development.
I want to create a platform that helps small businesses, landlords, auto shops, and similar operators automatically:
Recently, MJ DeMarco replied to my concept. At first, he didn’t think the idea had anything unique — but then he asked Gemini for a workflow breakdown, and the results helped him see the potential. His revised feedback emphasized the value in creating something that:
His suggestion highlighted that most current solutions are far too complex, enterprise-focused, or inefficient. My idea could simplify the process dramatically.
My Questions for the Fastlane Forum
1. Should this product be a desktop application, a cloud web platform, or a hybrid?
MJ made it sound like the workflow could be extremely simple for users, which makes me wonder if a downloadable desktop version would:
But a web platform could:
2. Is it smarter to manually code the entire platform… or use AI tools to speed up development?
I’m currently teaching myself to code (HTML now, moving into JavaScript, Java, and Python). My goal is to control the product and understand the architecture.
But AI coding tools could:
I’d love to hear from founders who have built SaaS platforms:
3. Would MJ’s suggested workflow be better implemented as a local application or a cloud-based SaaS?
His example was incredibly streamlined:
I want to build exactly this — but I’m debating the best environment for it.
Current Progress:
My goal is to build a simple, clean, Fastlane-style MVP that solves a painful, recurring problem.
What I’m Asking For
I would love community input on:
Thank you in advance
I’m looking for insight, guidance, and honest feedback on a tech business I’m building — specifically whether I should design it as a desktop platform, website, or both, and whether I should manually code it myself or leverage AI-assisted development.
I want to create a platform that helps small businesses, landlords, auto shops, and similar operators automatically:
- Organize and store important documents
- Extract key info (deadlines, renewal dates, payments, terms)
- Trigger automated notifications and reminders
- Simplify basic bookkeeping tied to uploaded files
Recently, MJ DeMarco replied to my concept. At first, he didn’t think the idea had anything unique — but then he asked Gemini for a workflow breakdown, and the results helped him see the potential. His revised feedback emphasized the value in creating something that:
- Takes a document (like a contract, invoice, or license)
- Uses AI to summarize key points
- Logs and stores it automatically
- Sets reminders, schedules invoicing, and tracks renewal dates
His suggestion highlighted that most current solutions are far too complex, enterprise-focused, or inefficient. My idea could simplify the process dramatically.
My Questions for the Fastlane Forum
1. Should this product be a desktop application, a cloud web platform, or a hybrid?
MJ made it sound like the workflow could be extremely simple for users, which makes me wonder if a downloadable desktop version would:
- Provide faster performance
- Simplify file handling
- Give users more control
But a web platform could:
- Offer cross-device access
- Enable easier updates
- Scale better for small businesses I’m unsure which direction aligns best with a Fastlane approach.
2. Is it smarter to manually code the entire platform… or use AI tools to speed up development?
I’m currently teaching myself to code (HTML now, moving into JavaScript, Java, and Python). My goal is to control the product and understand the architecture.
But AI coding tools could:
- Speed up development significantly
- Generate boilerplate faster
- Help me ship my MVP sooner. On the other hand, relying too heavily on AI might reduce my ability to iterate or maintain the product long-term.
I’d love to hear from founders who have built SaaS platforms:
- When is it worth coding manually?
- When is AI-based development a competitive advantage?
- What skills are mandatory before launching an MVP?
3. Would MJ’s suggested workflow be better implemented as a local application or a cloud-based SaaS?
His example was incredibly streamlined:
- Upload a PDF (e.g., license contract)
- AI spits out a summary with terms, dates, reminders
- User approves or edits
- The system logs everything automatically
- It triggers reminders and invoicing
I want to build exactly this — but I’m debating the best environment for it.
Current Progress:
- Actively teaching myself full-stack development to increase flexibility and control
- Researching document management, CLM tools, and AI extraction systems
- Studying SaaS architecture and database design
- Exploring OpenAI, Claude, and Gemini for document parsing
My goal is to build a simple, clean, Fastlane-style MVP that solves a painful, recurring problem.
What I’m Asking For
I would love community input on:
- Whether this should be a desktop app, web app, or hybrid
- Whether manual coding or AI-assisted coding is more strategic
- What the ideal tech stack might be
- Any pitfalls I should avoid
- Whether you see Fastlane potential in this direction
Thank you in advance
