Hey guys,
I'm aware of how slowlane minded this post is, I'm not entirely sure what kind of reaction I'm expecting to get, but I figured this is a good place to ask and see if my head needs a wobble.
About me:
I'm in the UK, I'm 30 and I've been working in IT since I was 18. I got interested in entrepreneurship and read the millionaire fastlane somewhere around 20. I flailed around and made all kinds of mistakes chasing my tail for a few years (looking back at my early 20s, I was an idiot and had no chance of making it lol) and I've also had plenty of years (maybe half of them) where I haven't been pursuing entrepreneurship short of just taking some opportunities as they came along. I think I kind of burnt myself out on the whole thing when I was a bit too young to know what I was doing. I've made some money, but I've never had anything close to an actual stable business.
Where I am now:
I'm currently in a very nice situation job wise, I have brilliant work/life balance, a slow job and lots of free time. For this reason I'm not really keen to change anything and push for a better job. However this does leave me a bit stuck financially and lacking any sense of progression. This has drawn me back to entrepreneurship.
In contrast to when I was younger though, I don't really want to work on an online business, at least not one where I'm building in the hopes that one day I'll make money. I'm more drawn in by local services and things of that nature.
I'm actually approaching this less from a millionaire fastlane style business and more from a second job kind of perspective, which I'm well aware would break all kinds of fastlane principles. (I actually have a pretty nice amount of money built up in an ISA and good equity in my house etc and the older I get less obsessed with becoming rich, and more into the concept of blending fastlane/entrepreneurship with just having a nice life and a good amount of wealth invested/available.)
My plan:
I've recently been thinking it might be nice to pick up a trade/skill like plastering or tiling with the goal of doing some side work in my spare time alongside a job. (Perhaps there will be options to change things around in the future, but I'm not even thinking about that, I'm just thinking about this short term plan for now).
So the reason for my post here and my questions are:
What are your thoughts on this plan? Am I being really stupid and aiming to pile on a load of slowlane work that you think sounds ridiculous? If so, what would you suggest I focus on and work towards instead?
Do you have any thoughts on the trades/skills I identified? I'm not wedded to them, I'm after something I can realistically learn, i.e. I'm not quitting my job and doing a 4 year apprenticeship to become an electrician, I have a mortgage etc.
Anyone else done anything similar? Do you think it's even realistic to pick up something like this part time?
Looking forward to seeing your responses.
just wanted to add that this forum has been and remains a fantastic resource, I've been a bit useless here but going forward / in the future I'd like to contribute more.
