Confused as all heck about idea validation

TLDR
How finished should my product be before I ask for cash? Is it possible to quickly validate an idea with offline marketing?

I read these threads a lot, and I've muddled my way through a lot of the recommended reading. While I see the concept touted endlessly, I'm still a little confused about idea validation.

I understand why it's necessary. What I don't entirely understand is how to actually do it.

So my situation is this. Looking at the fantastic article @JasonR posted in his Golden Nuggets thread, I've put together possible solutions for each of the elements (Lead Magnet, TripWire, ...). I'm just not sure if I should be building the product right now, or working on selling it?

Also, I'm targeting a market that doesn't use the internet a whole lot. Any suggestions for quickly validating an idea that isn't susceptible to AdWords, Facebook Ads, etc.?
