I'm looking for recommendations for writing software code (websites).

I do much better with a book in hand versus websites for digesting info.

All input welcomed.

For starters, tell us what programming language you are using, and then maybe we can make recommendations.

Language?
That shows my intelligence level.
I know a little html but I want to try to create a website for my idea.
What language do you suggest and books for it?

PHP is a safe bet. Works seamlessly with HTML.

But if you have zero knowledge about programming, perhaps the best first step is to start with Wordpress and enrich your website with some plug ins.

Wordpress is an online CMS, it's a huge space in itself.

writing software code and creating websites = two different things.

Anyway, if your aim is to create websites, i suggest you start by using a cms (content management system) like wordpress or joomla and modify them to suit your needs. No need to start from 0 and reinvent the wheel.

If you insist on starting from 0, 90% of all websites on the web are using just html and php.

Later edit: Posted the same time as above poster. And the same stuff.

I'll second the thought that if you simply want a website then learn how to use a CMS like Drupal or Wordpress. Even if it doesn't do exactly what you want it to it's much quicker and easier to learn how to modify the CMS vs. building something of your own from scratch.

But, to answer your question:

The first will teach you basic PHP and MySQL and the second will give you an idea of what you should know to design more complex applications.

If you are looking to program, the O'reilly books are, in my opinion, the best on the market. There are both reference books as well as "cookbooks" with great examples.

You can build a website in any language you choose, php, perl, etc. You just need to the concepts first.

"Getting Real: The smarter, faster, easier way to build a successful web application"

It talks about the mindset of creating a web app and software. It has changed the way I do business.

It is written by 37Signals.

Highly recommended!!!

Good read - the html version is available for free here: Getting Real
