I'm sure you all know of the podcast How I Built this, where Guy interviews some of the biggest founders in modern history. It's one of my favourite podcasts, hearing about the journey people have taken to get to where they are now.

He has now put his learnings of his interviews in a book (surprised he hasn't done this earlier to be honest), it's really well written and easy to read. I found myself finishing it in 4 days which is a near record for me.

My 3 biggest takeaways:

  1. Scary vs Dangerous: Starting a business is scary, not dangerous. It's the unknown that we fear but in reality it is safer than we think (especially if we don't act recklessly and continually mitigate risk as best we can)
  2. All big businesses started with one small first step: With a few expectations, most businesses start out with a very modest first step. Their first store, first customer, first item of clothing, first product etc. It's amazing when you really think about these companies beginnings (Airbnb literally started as an airbed in the founders apartment, FUBU started when the guy and his mum knitted some hats and sold them on the street, Michael Dell started upgrading PCs in his college dorm). It encapsulates the concept of just DOING, once you get going who knows where it will take you.
  3. Entrepreneurs aren't special: They are just the ones that took the leap.
Highly recommend the book for how interesting it is, lessons inside as well as it being hugely motivating.
