Hi guys,

my name is Humdy and I am a 4th year medical student in the UK. I would like some advice on a particular matter.

i always thought that medicine is a career that pays well due to my parent, however after reading the Millionaire Fastlane , I completely changed my mind. The average salary in the UK for a doctor is about £60000 per year. However, I don’t want to quit medicine now as it’s actually a very rewarding job, and I am too far gone into the degree as I only have 2 years until I graduate.

This leaves me with one option - turning my medicine career into a fastlane business. I would appreciate any advice on how to make this happen.

i thought about opening a private clinic such as a laser-eye surgery clinic for those wishing to become spectacle free. The only skepticism I have is that medicine has become hyper-inflated with thousands of medical students and doctors now, so it plays into the cliche saying that “if it was easy, everybody would do it”

any thoughts and advice?

Go on TV and then write books and healthy eating training courses.

I admire you for pursuing medicine. Goodluck in your studies and future career. I am a third into Millionaire Fastlane but have read Unscripted already. Basing on what I read so far, I would suggest making a side hustle related to you profession. Maybe a vlog or social media page promoting your profession or specialization. Or if you do want to pursue LASIK surgery clinic, that would be good too. Maybe develop something for eyecare (assuming you are an opthalmologist). Hopefully the side hustle will gain a following, and turn into something profitable.

Thanks for the advice! I think starting a social media page is a great idea. the following would also allow me to gain a solid customer base for the future when I decide to open a LASIK clinic.

the only thing I would say is that the barrier to entry is so little and there are tonnes of students and doctors who are trying the same thing. I guess exceptionalism is the key to standing out from the crowd in this case

The eyes are visual. People get attracted to the technology, the video's that tend to teach the graphics and you could stand out by investing in teaching in front of the camera and using technology to explain the healing procedure. As there are all kinds of new healing methods of vision. There are the normal eye care and photographic images everyone looks at getting glasses and then there are the Blind for example you never hear about or the latest technology. I can go to any eye doctor and sit in there office, look at rows of glasses, but you don't really have anything capturing your attention to what you can learn about vision or eyes. For example: I just had some type of x-ray of the back of my eyes. I thought it was kind neat, but i have no knowledge on any of the technology used, what it's for. Even though, I had all these tests, it's not really explained what they are all about. If you have different eye diseases, people are given little information what it's all about.

Obviously, I had to go to the internet even to look up what the antibiotic was used for, what types of bacteria get in your eye, and how exactly do your get bacteria in your eye in the first place?

I think you have to go walk in a few places and see what kind of information they give you yourself, and see what kind of information they leave out and then you have the answer. Take surveys of people and what their experience is with eye doctors and why information they are not given. It's seeing what the missing pieces are. Most people follow the script or trend that everyone else doing at the same time. It depends on whether you want to follow or lead. There is nothing written in stone with creativity or how you create your presentation, product, or information.

thank you for this information. This method would definitely lead to some sort of exceptionalism. I think gathering information from the public on what they believe is missing in eye care would help to create a centre that would identify a need and solve that need.

in your example, what would have made it easier for you?
a single video explaining how the disease works and how to treat it?

The whole process if foreign to me since I never really had issues until 2022. As you stated if someone is all of a sudden having issues they've never encountered before like myself, the video on the procedures a lone with tests is informative. As i had a lot of them, but I couldn't tell you what they are for, why the eye doctor did them, and what the point of the tests are done for. I just went in, they did the tests, didn't really explain too much.

Then 2nd part if I have a bacteria infection in one eye, my friend in another country is asking me what kind of bacteria or diagnosis. It wasn't on the prescription or paper work. I didn't have an answer. The idea that you have eye health issues never really was an issue. There are many people wearing glasses from the store and never get an eye exam. Right there is one topic the opinion of self-diagnosing your vision and what it can do to your eyes. The diseases themself are not really explained thoroughly.

Diseases themselves I'm sure you can make a video explaining each one and what it does to the eyes. How to treat it effectively. Then the procedures themselves. Some people do like to know all the details while others do not.

I think most people wearing glasses know how to pick out frames, wear them, and as long as they can see, they don't ask questions. When something more serious occurs then they want to know why. Contacts are common, but then you have all kinds of different lenses and they have issues if they are not cleaning them properly. Then you have people ordering them online and never go back to the physician every year of two years.

Then tend to let them go. If eyes are changing all the time, they many people may not even know this information.

I would say you have a lot to cover about eyes in many different ways. It may just be some people only focus on selling the product and not always really giving information out to the public of what is safe and destructive to their eyes.

I'll chime in as an eye doctor. Patient education is vital and it's very easy for the eye doctor to just go through the motions and prescribe glasses/ drops etc without really explaining the benefits. Healthcare in general is more sales oriented than we tend to think. Patients often need to change behaviours that led them to their problems, and without compelling reasons (through education), it s very difficult.

I believe that is the main issue now...to stand out amidst the throng of other doctors, specialists and clinics.

Do you guys have any idea on how to build a following and attract attention on sites such as Instagram and YouTube? I have seen many other doctors and medical students try the same thing, and I am worried that it has become very saturated.

any help or advice would be much appreciated :)

My husband watches stretching and PT exercises on IG. Maybe something light, practical and informative.

Which area of Health are you studying? Start there with what you have been studying, also what are you interested in?

The whole preventative health model (known as medicine 3.0) is gaining momentum and is going to be the future of health care with a lot of private practices in the UK popping up
