Bandwidth

When developing a new site, such as a forum, what's the best way to estimate bandwidth needs? And for future expansion? Virtual or dedicated?

I did a bit of research, even though I don't understand all the stats fully, it seems like each host (esp. the big players) skew the numbers in their favor. Or at least it's difficult to determine quality from one to the next.

Does anyone know a good rule of thumb, or at least a place to start? Recommendations?
