Hi everyone,
I’m 20 years old and want to share a situation I’m going through that has me pretty confused, and I really need some advice.
A year ago I finished high school and started university, but after a few months I realized it wasn’t for me at the time, so I dropped out. Since then, I’ve been working full-time at an ice cream shop (selling and making the icecream) , where I’ve been for the past three months, right now during summer.
I feel like I’m at a crucial point in my life, a turning point where I have to make decisions that could define my short- and long-term future. My mom insists that I go back to university to study languages. University is free in my country, and since I already know a second language, the course would be relatively easy and manageable. She also suggests I keep working part-time at the ice cream shop, which is just a 10-minute walk away, so it’s comfortable and convenient.
From a logical and practical perspective, I understand this is a safe option, with a clear and stable path. Having a university degree can open many doors, and the stability of a comfortable job is something I value. But on the other hand, there’s a voice inside me telling me that this isn’t the only path nor the one I’m most passionate about.
I’ve always had a strong interest in becoming an entrepreneur. I believe learning how to sell is a fundamental skill for anyone who wants to create their own business or project. That’s why I’m considering looking for a sales job where I can develop practical skills and grow professionally. I see this as an opportunity to learn on the ground, not just in the classroom.
At the same time, I have a personal project that’s very important to me: developing a YouTube channel. This project is completely independent from my educational or work options, and I want to dedicate time and energy to help it grow. It’s something I’m passionate about and believe I can invest in for the future.
The problem is, I don’t know how long it will take me to find a good sales job or how I would combine it with my YouTube channel. I’m also unsure how I’d handle family and social pressure if I choose to stray from the “safe” path. The idea of doing everything at once — university, a sales job, and YouTube — also raises doubts about how to manage my time and energy.
So basically, I have three paths ahead of me:
The path my mom wants: go back to university, keep working part-time at the ice cream shop, and do YouTube.
The path I propose: look for a sales job and dedicate time to YouTube.
A mix: university, part-time sales job, and YouTube.
I’m trying to find a balance between meeting family expectations and following what really motivates and excites me. Has anyone here gone through something similar? What advice would you give me? Do you think it’s better to play it safe or take a risk following my passion and gut feeling? How would you handle juggling multiple responsibilities without burning out?
Thanks for taking the time to read. Any opinions, advice, or experiences you can share would be greatly appreciated.
