How safe and reliable is affiliate marketing?

I've been reading tons of information about these "Parasites" that will change your referral link and steal your commissions.

And merchants who will rack up tons of commission debt to affiliates and then drop the program to avoid paying them.

How often does this stuff actually happen?
Any personal experiences?
Affiliate recommendations?

I'm currently signed up with link share and cj. I see so many bad things about them. They are both big so they must be doing something right/legit.

I know a lot of the bs I read is just competitors trying to shoot down there competition but I can't help but ask myself if any of it is true.

I pretty much only trust this forum because I know all the riff raft and bs between competing company's is non existent here.
