I don't know if I should be posting this, since I am a relatively new member and I am aware that as such I may not be the best to write this. Honestly, I am expecting to get criticized, but what the hell...
I feel bad when a new member asks for advice but barely gets any (or doesn't even get it) or even gets negative feedback for asking stupid questions. I got a great feedback whenever I asked for advice and I thank this community for that.
New members, first of all, the numbers below your profile pic aren't everything, but they matter. If you ask for advice, but have 0 likes and only one message (asking for advice) it can affect the feedback you get. Start with an introductory post. Then make a search to see if a thread about your problem already exists. If it's something general like coding, how to find ideas or how to use AdWords, I can guarantee you that there are going to be tens or even hundreds of threads.
If it implies something specific, that apparently only applies to yourself, then ask. However, there are two things that will determine the feedback you are going to get: your question and the structure of your thread.
If you ask "should I break up with my girlfriend", that is personal and you could write a book about your relationship before anyone can respond to that with at least a little bit of objectivity. If you ask "how can I make 1M$ by working 4 hours a week", you will get negative feedback because the question lacks common sense.
The structure of your thread is important because it puts things into perspective. Saying "I need to change myself, because I procrastinate, please help, I am 20 years old" says absolutely nothing. Why do you procrastinate? Fear? Lack of interest? Lack of commitment? Something else? The character of the questions you ask greatly influences the appropriateness of the answers. If you ask questions without any details should you be surprised if you receive answers without any relevance?
- Introduce the actions or the reasons that led you to having the problem X
- Explain what made you realize that you have the problem X
- Talk about how the problem X affects you or your life
- Show that you actually thought about it by proposing how you tried to change it before asking for advice
- Formulate appropriately your question and ask
You need the biggest positive feedback you can get, because if 20 members reply, you are likely to get 20 different possible solutions.
This forum will make a bigger difference in your life in two months, than most of the things you did in the last two years, even if you just start following the advice you get. If you follow through, then it will probably be the biggest change of your life (still going through this one
