Over the past year I have been working on an online marketplace for consumers to buy and sell used cell phones. Ebay, Craigslist, and Gazelle currently have a majority of the used cell phone industry; at the time of this post there are over 100,000 phones listed for sale on Ebay. However, if a better marketplace can obtain even the slightest market share, it could be a very profitable business.
Consumers use Ebay but aren't happy with the fees, the feedback system, or being limited to PayPal. Consumers can avoid those issues by using Craigslist but aren't always comfortable meeting people in person or having to worry about scams. With Gazelle, consumers can trade in their phone for cash, but the consumer is being paid only a third of what their phone is actually worth.
CellSolo offers a fixed-price Cell Phone marketplace, a double blind feedback system, multiple payment options, and less fees.
I am currently working on the following:
1. Obtaining feedback on the site design and functionality and what users want from this website/what can be improved.
2. Creating a new homepage that provides a better explanation of the website.
3. Getting users signed up and adding inventory on the marketplace.
4. Fixing bugs
The past year has been very challenging and I expect it to only get more difficult going forward. There is a lot of work to do with the site's features, design, SEO, marketing, and customer service. I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has been challenged in starting a marketplace, as well as any advice, feedback or questions about the website.
