Hello Fastlane Community!
About 8 years ago, the wife and I start a home-based daycare so she can earn for herself and have the self respect she had prior to our marriage. A side note, she only lived in the US for about 2 years at the time and could not get good quality work here because like many educated immigrants, her 2 college degrees were not recognized in the US (NY) for valid employment in her field! So the choice was get another degree in NY or start a business (my idea). We chose the business route. 8 years later and we are only $350K away from the business bringing in $2 million, all from the confines of our home. Why am I disclosing this, not to brag, but to prove several points I have recently discovered in reading "The Great Rat Race" started only days ago.
My wife's work experience and education did not fit "the script" as required to get the better jobs in the US because she was educated and experienced in Russia. Employers could not see past their own noses how qualified and capable she is because she spoke English poorly and with a strong accent. They never took more than a few seconds to evaluate and judge her and her capabilities.
Observing my new wife's experience and combining it with observing my parents and other elderly relatives and friends demonstrated to me how so much of what I was told how to live my life in the US was complete B.S. My parents retirement after just a few years quickly went into the toilet. Nothing worked out for them. Bad health made doing anything in retirement imposible. Money did not last because medical bills, inflation, and increased housing cost, etc... You get the idea!
In just a few days of reading, I am able to dissect my life and that of my parents and wife. I see the validity of the strategies I am reviewing. I can understand how my parents never had a chance because of the way they planned it using tradition systems pushed by the "script and conventional people."
Why am I here? I just turned 61 and my wife is 55. We have no one to take care of us in old age. We have to do it. I am retired from my corporate gig of IT (30 years +). I can see the light and what I see is not good. I want to fix it so we do not go down the same failed road so many have travelled. Inconsistencies in life I have observed over the years that were not explainable are now understandable. The system is rigged. But unlike some conspiracy theorist spouting it from some mountain top I see capable, thinking, rational people putting the knowledge down on paper for me to read, so I can use my intellect and experience to conclude "hell yes" I now understand why it is the way it is!
