Hey everyone! I'm Antti, 25, from Finland. I'm working remotely as a software engineer, programming industrial factory robots while planning my escape. I graduated with a master’s degree in computer science, which was probably not a bad deal since the studies themselves are free in Finland (ofc living expenses + opportunity cost aren't), and I really leveled up not only my technical skills, but also my ability to work hard, learn, and socialize (I used to be really bad socially).
I've been making video games alongside my studies for about six years now, and I'm hoping to turn that into my escape route. In many ways, I think game development is like being a musician or any kind of artist in the way that you often need to be in the top 0.1% to actually make a living from it.
It's hard to know whether creating and selling games is a realistic path for me, or if it demands Michael Jordan-level talent. And even then, I can't tell if that level of skill is something I can reach through effort, or if it requires some kind of innate ability, or levels of creativity that I may or may not have.
Either way, I thought I would start selling shovels instead, while I level up my skill set.
Today I created a community on the Skool platform, where I teach programmers with day jobs to make games. I’ve read a lot of advice on narrowing down the target audience, and I figured programmers would be a really good one. I regularly see posts on Reddit from programmers who want to start making games and are looking for resources. They also have disposable income, which means they can afford to spend some to join my group. I also really like learning and teaching, so it would be a good fit interest-wise. My plan is to start with a free community and then increase the price once I have a couple dozen members, and then regularly hike the price at least until I start seeing diminishing returns from lower conversion and higher churn.
Next steps are to create learning material for the community, like basic Unity courses, and learn marketing to get members. My ideas for marketing are creating YouTube content, and once the community has low enough churn at a good price point, start doing paid advertisements. If anyone has good resources for learning marketing a service like this or for creating good courses and content, let me know
My initial goal is to make enough monthly revenue to live off of, which would be around 1000€/month, and then after that I will look into quitting my job and scaling all the way to retirement numbers.
Looking forward to learning more and meeting other like-minded folk!
