I built an AI Text-to-Speech Chrome extension for WEB listening. Is there a real SaaS business here? Looking for honest feedback.

Hey Fastlaners,

A while back, I made a post here about my previous Chrome extension project, Keeplinker.

That was primarily a pet project. It taught me a lot about building browser extensions, getting something published, and the difference between creating a useful tool and building an actual business. And most importantly taught me what not to do when building digital products.

Now, I'm taking a much more structured, business-first approach to a new problem I ran into.

The "Aha!" Moment

A few months ago, I was reading a long, dense response inside ChatGPT. I clicked the native audio button to let it read the text out loud while I walked around the room.
It read out a massive 500-word paragraph. At one point, I heard something super interesting, walked back to my laptop, and tried to jump straight to that exact line in the text.
I couldn't. There was no visual indicator, no active word tracking, no quick way to jump into the middle of the audio. I had to manually scan a wall of text to figure out where the AI voice was.

From Personal Frustration to Market Research

At first, I thought this was just a small feature I'd personally find useful.
But then I started looking into the broader text-to-speech (TTS) market, and it turned out to be much more interesting than I expected.

There are already some pretty established players:
  • Speechify- over 1 million users on its Chrome extension alone.
  • NaturalReader- another 1 million users on Chrome.
  • Read Aloud TTS- around 600,000 Chrome users.
And these are just a few examples.
I also started researching Google search keywords around terms like "text to speech," "read aloud," "text to speech Chrome extension," and "PDF reader aloud"

What caught my attention wasn't just the competition, but the fact that people are actively looking for solutions to these problems.
Of course, a large existing audience doesn't automatically mean there's room for another competitor. And keyword searches don't necessarily translate into paying customers.
But it gave me enough confidence that the underlying need is real and worth investigating further.

So I Built VibeReader

My idea wasn't to create yet another tool that simply converts text into audio.
I wanted to focus on the actual reading and listening experience.

That's how VibeReader came about.

It's a Chrome extension that lets you listen to web pages and PDFs while following the text through synchronized word-by-word highlighting.
You can jump to a particular part of the text, switch between voices, adjust playback, and continue reading or listening without losing your place.

There are free voices available without a subscription, plus more natural premium AI voices for those who want a better listening experience.
The extension was approved on the Chrome Web Store just few days ago.

To be transparent, I'm starting almost from zero. A few friends have installed it, and I've had a few registrations, but no meaningful traction yet.
So I'm not here to share a success story. I'm here to figure out whether this could become one. My goal is 20 k - 30 k $ MRR (Monthly Recurring revenue) which is pretty realistic for a micro-SaaS in this niche over the time, I believe.

Here is a screenshot of it in action, and opened extension menu, just so you understand how it looks like on a random article from Wikipedia:
Снимок экрана 2026-11-05 в 23.46.04.webp
I also have integration with PDFs and Google Docs.

The Business Model

I'm starting with a straightforward freemium B2C model:
  • Free text-to-speech voices with unlimited listening.
  • Premium AI voices for $9.99/month or $99/year (way better quality and selection of voices, compared to the free tier).
  • Monthly premium usage limits to keep API costs predictable.
The goal is to find a specific group of users who value the experience enough to pay for it.
I'm aware that having a million users and building a profitable business are two very different things.

Acquisition costs, free-to-paid conversion, retention, and API costs will ultimately determine whether the model works.

A Potential B2B Opportunity

There's also a second direction I'm interested in exploring in the future.
What if websites could offer this same listening experience to their visitors?
Imagine a news publisher, educational website, or blog embedding a lightweight audio widget that reads articles aloud while highlighting the text.
The website owner would only need to integrate a small JavaScript snippet.
That could potentially become a separate B2B SaaS product, with publishers paying for the service based on usage or a subscription.

But for now, my priority is to validate the underlying technology and user experience through the consumer extension.

Looking at It Through the CENTS Framework

I've been thinking about this opportunity in terms of MJ's CENTS framework.

Need: The existing TTS products and their audiences suggest a real need. What I haven't validated yet is whether VibeReader solves that need better enough for users to switch or pay.

Entry: Probably my biggest concern. Building a basic TTS extension nowdays is easier than ever. I don't believe synchronized highlighting alone creates a meaningful barrier to entry. Distribution, product quality, retention, and potentially B2B integrations might be more defensible over time.

Control: I own the software and customer relationships, but I'm dependent on Chrome and third-party voice APIs. That's a risk I need to manage.

Scale: The software can potentially serve a global audience without a proportional increase in operating costs, although premium audio generation does introduce variable expenses (well, my unit economics says I'll be alright, but only time will show the real usage here).

Time: The business model is subscription-based, and the goal is to build something that doesn't require my direct involvement for every customer.

Where I'd Love Some Honest Feedback

I'm especially interested in hearing your thoughts on a few things:
  1. Is this a viable business opportunity, or am I just building a nice feature in an already crowded market?
  2. What would you consider a meaningful competitive advantage in this space? Is a better user experience / voices enough to get started?
  3. Would you focus entirely on validating B2C first, or start talking to potential B2B customers in parallel?
  4. How would you approach acquiring the first 100–1,000 users with a limited marketing budget?
I'm considering Google Search Ads, OpenAI Ads, Chrome Web Store optimization, Product Hunt, and reaching out to relevant communities.
But before investing heavily in marketing, I want to understand whether people actually find the product valuable enough to keep using it.

If anyone is interested in trying it, I'd genuinely appreciate feedback on the experience, especially what feels unnecessary, confusing, or missing.

Here is a Google Chrome Store link. Will be glad to hear your feedback!

And the website itself: https://vibereader.ai

Feel free to challenge the assumptions. That's exactly why I'm posting here.

Thanks!
