CONTEXT
I've been trying to build a fastlane business as a side hustle until recently when our family decide to relocate new country which allowed me to go full time. Even though I had this more time on my hand with less financial pressure, my productivity and ability to think and discern clearly tanked for over a month. This triggered my wife to be concerned, and we just had an argument most of which was me being defensive about where I am (and I clearly know the problem is within me). In my walk to a local cafe to clear my head and assess what is going wrong, I decided to write down my new challenges here and how I am addressing it in this thread. I hope that this would provide value for those struggling now or in the future.
CURRENT STATE
To describe what I am going through...
1. I don't feel confident about what I am doing. There is no conviction about the value that I can provide. I feel unclear about where I want to take the business.
2. Everything in my head feels cloudy. I cannot describe what I plan to do / achieved throughout the day to my wife concisely at the end of the day.
3. I feel like I'm working hard, but I don't produce any results.
MY SELF-ASSESSMENT
1. Problem # 1: COMFORT
Because of the false sense of financial cushion and us setting up our apartment in a way to optimize for my work, I honest lost significant amount of drive. I am no longer working in my basement / closet (which was my set up previously while working full time). I realize that there has to be at least some intentional discomfort in my daily routine to remind myself to think clearly and work like my life depends on it.
2. Problem # 2: CONTEXT SWITCHING
Now that I "can" work from home and dropping/picking up kids only takes 10 minutes, the separation between my work and family matters became almost non-existent. It takes a while before I can get into "work mode" or I keep getting distracted and work on something that is not of priority.
3. Problem #3: LACK of GOAL SETTING
This could be related to my lack of conviction but I have not been setting short-term and long-term goal setting. There is a reason why @MJ DeMarco and many others in this forums are super-passionate about goal setting. Without goals, my mind shuts down and end work when I don't "feel like it".
CHANGES THAT I AM IMPLEMENTING EFFECTIVE NOW
1. Walking to work
It's been super hot and humid where I live (constantly 35C (95F). I've been living my the comfort of a new car and short 5 minute drive. Walking to work will achieve two things: 1) Signal to my body that my work routine as started and my mind get get into the work mode 2) As I sweat out in the sun or rain, I remind myself to work hard.
2. Journal
It's super important to journal get unnecessary junk out of my head to be effective. There are several books that people recommend, but I will be using the Artist's way as my guide for effective journaling
3. Goal settings
I've been pivoting a lot which was my lazy excuse for not setting goals and keep myself accountable. I will set goals and write them down.
I will update weekly / bi-weekly on my progress and learnings.I would appreciate your feedbacks. Also, feel free to ask any questions.
