MJ -- You haven't had this stone in your path... good for you...

Sometimes, we don't know the whole story. It's easy to dismiss others' struggles. I was 49 years old the first time I tried retiring. Then, almost immediately, I had several deaths in my family (5 deaths in 4 months) and a parade of adverse events that devastated my life. My way of dealing with things is that I lost myself in my work on my construction projects. That reaction allowed me to survive that dark season. When my men went home each evening, I kept on working until I could fall into bed and go to sleep all night. I spent my weekends working in my woodshop making parts for the daily carpentry work I was doing. During those days, I had that hard physical work that kept me going.

Thanks @MJ DeMarco, I am amazed that having just returned to this forum I am being hit by useful and timely information again and again. I have been aware for some time that I need a new , or to be more precise a better, purpose now that I have achieved most of what I wanted to achieve*. Reading The Great Race Escape has reminded me how I've let things slip and encouraged me to revisit and reappraise my long, medium and short term goals and this video is just more fuel for the fire. Thank you once again.

*I am also very much aware I set the bar low when I first read the books and got into action.

General spiritual wisdom has it that purpose is ultimately found it some sort of meaningful service or contribution to something outside one's self. Granted it is difficult or impossible for most of us to do this if we are wallowing in the lower portion of Maslow's hierarchy, but MJ's video is about purpose after self-actualization is put on the menu. This is why MJ's $5 billion experiment (GRRE 96 - Purpose Driven Strategy) is such an awesome thing to do.

I love the quote "Whoever said money can't buy happiness didn't know where to shop." I always took this to mean that you can use money to get your physical, emotional, and spiritual health elevated, and ultimately buy the time (freedom) to serve others / give back / improve the world.

I have a book from 1994 called "Gospels of Wealth: How the Rich Portray Their Lives". The negative press of the ostentatious hedonism of the modern rich contrasts with this more scholarly work, which comes to the conclusion that helping others becomes the most common purpose of the rich, as MJ suggests in the video WRT Gates and others. Noblesse oblige is still alive.

The bedrock of AA is finding purpose in service. A good friend of mine is part Lakota, and her full-blood grandmother related to her the tribal treatment for depression: go do something for ten other people.

"Joy is the reward, really, of seeking to give joy to others. When you show compassion, when you show caring, when you show love to others, do things for others, in a wonderful way you have a deep joy that you can get in no other way. You can’t buy it with money. You can be the richest person on Earth, but if you care only about yourself, I can bet my bottom dollar you will not be happy and joyful. But when you are caring, compassionate, more concerned about the welfare of others than about your own, wonderfully, wonderfully, you suddenly feel a warm glow in your heart, because you have, in fact, wiped the tears from the eyes of another. "
