Meanwhile in Germany the pension is no longer secured after 2025 and lots of people still do not invest at all. The more I communicate with different people, the more I believe to live in a parallel universe.

I saw that BBC report and was surprised that the figure was so low, though I am relatively new to some of the more usual living expenses, for reasons it's not worth going in to. I have not done as much as I should have done with private pensions, though I've always been a bit reluctant to stick stuff away in a pot that I cannot reach until a certain age on the basis that there's nothing saying I will reach that age.

I don't think the figure can be correct unless they assume you also receive the state pension on top. It seems way too low. That said it was a study by academics and we know how out of touch they can be. Interesting that they included a Netflix subscription in their calculations.

Further down the article they also quote figures for a comfortable retirement of £33,600 for one person and £49,700 for a couple. This still seems low to me even though living expenses usually fall in retirement. It shows the importance of the Fastlane if you want a decent retirement.

with that amount of money, you can survive, not live. Very different.

Do the elderly get “free” housing in the UK?

I can’t imagine your rent would be any less than 10,900 pounds per year.
A lot of the elderly in the UK own their own homes, so that figure isn't taking into account rent, mortgage payments or that kind of stuff. That proportion will drop as today's young people become elderly, because the housing market is making it too difficult for a lot of people with normal jobs to afford to buy a house, so renting is becoming more of a thing.

Can't speak for renters but the homeowners I knew who retired paid off their mortgage before retirement

Rhode Island for now.
If you don't have a plan for your own life, you will fall into somebody else's plan for you.
And do you know what they have planned for you?
... Not much.
@thechosen1 This is the bright spot in an otherwise terrible - sidewalker mentality filled - thread.

That said... you're of course quoting the great motivational speaker, Jim Rohn:

I think it would be appropriate for you to update your post, with that attribution.
Less people think you're passing it off as your own.

I actually didn't know who said it, I've heard the same quote a thousand times by lots of different people!

I doubt he was the first person to say such a phrase.

It’s more like “waiting to die” rather than “you only need 11k / year.”
