"The healthy man asks not for so much for happiness as for an opportunity to exercise his capacities. And if he must pay the penalty of pain for this freedom and this power, he makes it cheerfully - it is not too great a price. We need resistance to raise us, as it raises the airplane or the bird. We need obstacles against which to sharpen our strength and stimulate our growth. Life without tragedy would be unworthy of a man."

"What, if some day or night a demon were to steal after you in your loneliest loneliness and say to you: 'This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more; and there will be nothing new in it, but every pain and every joy and every thought and sigh and everything unutterably small or great in your life will have to return to you, all in the same succession and sequence - even this spider and this moonlight between the trees, and even this moment and I myself. The eternal hourglass of existence is turned upside down again and again, and you with it, speck of dust!' Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once experienced the tremendous moment when you would have answered ‘You are a god and I never had heard anything more divine!’ If this thought took possession of you, it would change you as you are, or perhaps crush you. The question on each and every thing ‘Do you desire this once more, and innumerable times more?’ would lie upon your actions as the greatest weight. Or how well disposed would you have to become to yourself and to life to crave nothing more fervently than this ultimate confirmation and seal?"

Something cool to read if you're into history and entrepreneurship:

This was one hell of a dude. Fought in the Texas Revolution, granted 1200+ acres of land, started towns, multiple companies, invented and innovated new products, created processes to transport refrigerated food, had a steam engine patent... Wow!

I think that all qualifies as something reminiscent of "fastlane"

Something that people need to be reminded of:

NEVER, EVER, TALK TO THE POLICE! EVER, DON'T YOU EVER EVEN F*CKING THINK ABOUT IT!

They aren't your friends. Don't think of them in terms of good or bad, but in terms of interests that are different than yours. Their main goals are 1) to preserve order (not justice) 2) to collect tax revenue via fines. They don't know who you are, and they don't care about you.

And they flat out F*cking tell you: "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

DON'T F*ckING TALK TO THE POLICE!

Watching this makes me think how this is a great example of how psychology/behavior shaping and government works.
If they wanted more people to use the stairs, they could have shut down/removed the escalator. 100% stair usage at the expense that it would cause people to be upset.
So by giving them the "choice" to use the more fun option people feel like they freely choose that option. Replace fun with easier/closer/faster/slower etc.. So now the escalator can be shut down more often and eventually removed and people won't be as upset since "hey I use the stairs now". The novelty of the stairs wears out after a while and by that time people vaguely remember when there use to be an escalator there. Fares/taxes increase, services and the quality decrease.

Freedom always feel free until you bump against the boundaries of that freedom.

Figured had to be a good quote that sums this up better and found this.

Well, the illusion of choice was cast long before this. At the point when your taxes were confiscated to build a transit station into which you had no input. If you're luck, that station connects two points where you actually want to go... if not, well, you can just pay for it.

Still, the piano keys are cute.

This is kind of amusing and makes me believe you have little experience with police in real life (or are a criminal)

I don't know, I've heard many times American cops are fairly brutal and Canadian cops are overall better than other places in the world, personally I've had more good than bad experiences with police and even if there are some bad ones, the majority are just normal people trying to do a job.

Maybe it's my white male privilege, despite me being harassed by law enforcement occasionally, there have been multiple instances where they gave me a free ride somewhere or overlooked some silly laws.

I challenge you to go out and talk to an officer, ask him or her how they're day went, maybe you will be lucky enough to have a pleasant chat, the last copper I talked to shared his life story and we talked about general stuff, his work, struggles and whatnot.

Bonus points if you are mildly intoxicated at the time..:rofl:

Mentioned trying out vegan meals to a friend, was funny to hear scripted talk...

''eating meat is manly''
''sissys eat plants''

I guess eating a dead animal pumped with steroids and who knows what makes you a man :fistbump:

It's interesting to see how main stream influences can influence people's thinking, we have been talking about diets lately and I just mentioned that they should try out vegan ''meat'' and see if they notice a difference between the fake and real stuff.

I'm gonna get a vegan pizza this weekend and see how it is, yet to try out MJs BK whopper (they were closed when I went by) perhaps next time.

Another form of scripted talk:

"fast food is unhealthy."

Really? Because it totally depends on the nutrients, your caloric intake, and other sources of vitamins.

If I eat a 500 kcal burger with 40g of protein, that's pretty good honestly. People will tell you it's bad for you and refuse to give a specific reason.

The difference is if I eat 1500-1900 kcal that day or go to 3000 kcal. 3000 Calories will make you fat no matter what you eat. Lack of protein (all fat & carb) will also make you squishy too. Lack of resistance exercise? Same thing.

IIFYM works. It makes sense. Slapping golden arches on a bag doesn't instantly make it obesity-inducing.

To add, you can usually fit small amounts of just about any food into your diet and still lose weight or get more fit if you are properly tracking what you eat. And doing exercise like walking, running, swimming, and/or weight lifting.

I’ve never had bad experiences with cops, been pulled over a few times while having my concealed carry and let them known about it and it was business as usual. However I agree, don’t talk to the cops! They ask if I know why I was pulled over(obviously speeding). “ No sir, what was the reason “ Literally anything you say they can use against you to write a ticket for admission you were breaking the law. Hope it never happens, but if someone breaks into the house I’ll use my rights to defend my family and have already talked to the wife about not saying anything to the police without an attorney and that I would be going to jail 100% if I shoot someone until our attorney showed up. One screw up can have me rightfully defending my family to being sued by the scumbags family that wanted to break into my house.

I may or may have not been using this excuse while stuffing myself with pizzas...

(I've been doing kickboxing lately) so I'm pretty sure with my workouts the amount of food I eat doesn't really matter at this point calorie wise, and my body has been getting slimmer despite having chocolates / candies :hilarious:

I remember when I was 18 working at Chick-fil-A having my free meal. Double chicken and cheese club sandwich with 2-3 sauce packets at 100 cal each with a large fry and a small ice cream cone. Every day I worked I ate this. Miss the good old days of being in shape and eating like crap haha.

Chik-fil-a is really one of the better ones in my opinion. Especially if you get grilled instead of fried - that's very healthy.

It's really all about knowing your numbers and sticking to a plan. The hard part for me is sticking to the plan because you have to always be preparing in advance and saying no to friends who want to go crazy on booze on the weekend haha

Or you can have no plan at all, just be ready to spend lots of money at Chipotle.

You'll notice the difference when you start feeling sick from all of the processed garbage in those snake oil products. If you're going to give vegan a go, try vegetables, fruits, beans etc - stuff that grew in the dirt, not stuff grown in a lab. There's more to food than taste and texture.

For optimal health, IIFYM is dangerous if you focus on macros only. Macros don't tell the entire story. There are also vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. You can have great macros but still have a shitty diet because you don't get some essential micronutrients or your diet is devoid of dietary fiber (some people watch their fiber on IIFYM but many probably only look at total carbs).

Also, there are many components of unhealthy foods that do contribute to poor health (processed sugar, trans fats, various chemical colorings, flavorings, etc.). So it may fit your macros but it most certainly doesn't work well for your body's optimal performance.

That makes sense. I take vitamins every day but need to do better on fiber.

I don't understand some of the other stuff, or haven't had convincing information on what those chemicals do (sugar, trans fats, flavorings, or food coloring). Actually, of that list I have seen evidence of trans fats being bad for you, but most foods don't contain them. I do try to look out for those.

People say artificial sweeteners are bad for you too, but I haven't found enough evidence to scare me away from a diet soda. If you have a study that really breaks it down, I'd be open to reading it. But if it was giving it to lab mice in doses 5 times their bodyweight, I don't buy into that either.

My rule for food is pretty simple. If it looks like what it was, I eat it. This is an entire fruit. This is obviously a leaf. This one over here has eyes.

If it has gained a new shape or texture via human processing, I treat it with great suspicion. I might still eat it, but in the same spirit as I would sample Halloween candy.

I'm gonna get a vegan pizza this weekend and see how it is

IMO, vegan pizza is the worst of the "replacements" -- the cheese melts funny (or not at all).

I usually take my vegan pizza cheeseless, or light w/the fake cheese.

I love vegan cheese, just not melted -- I think it reminds me too much of the real thing.

Also, a lot of the fake cheese are filled with palm oil which is a pretty inflammatory oil and not good if you struggle with cholesterol.

Mentioned trying out vegan meals to a friend, was funny to hear scripted talk...

Not unusual, actually, perfectly normal.

A "Soft" Robot Explores The Deepest Point In The Ocean (Mariana Trench)

The Challenger Deep, at over 35,000 feet below sea level, represents the lowest point of the trench. The pressure there is hard to wrap your head around: roughly a thousand times the normal atmospheric pressure at sea level, or more colorfully described as “an elephant standing on your thumb.”
