Hey red pill people ;--)

My name is Jonathan and in less than a month I will turn 24 years old. I have 6 years to become a millionaire.

This is my boring story... start reading from the bottom to get to the meat of this thread :--)

Context

  • I started uploading YouTube videos once a week since September 2019. It failed. No one watched and I failed to build an audience. But for me, it was a win because I learned soooo much about marketing, communication, video editing, copywriting, and more.

  • C0VlD-19 arrived and it changed everything for me.
I invested more time on YouTube and tested a lot of ways to grow my channel, but still failed.
I saw James Jani going viral on YouTube and it blew my mind!
I made a video about Jani and it was the best video I've ever published,
I invested around 100 hours making this video applying James's tips from his
thread on the forum and indeed it got some traction.

  • In July after I released Jani's video I went all-in on my consulting business.
I'm still in my validation phase but since July the progress was insane!
I broke a few glass ceilings and my goal of becoming a millionaire before 30 seems so real!
The numbers are not insane yet but it's just the mindset after seeing how things are working that make it so real in my head.

  • At the end of July, I did 11 video calls with prospects all around the world.
And this month started sooo good.
Yesterday someone paid me for 1 hour of consulting for the first time, it wasn't a lot but it was a nice feeling.
I also got this week 16 calls so far which is the best week I had so far.

The reason why I get more calls is I started posting on LinkedIn and the organic reach there is insane! 1 post got 20+ likes and around 2000 views :O

My current mission

My ideal offer is to coach/consult people for a month in which we will do every week 1 session for an hour,
I'm going to teach them step-by-step on how to get more interviews as a software developer.

A little bit background, since the age of 13 years old I was learning programming.
When most people were out with friends I was doing homework and learning to program.

1.5 years ago, I got my first job as a software developer, I had no connections, no degree, and no experience.
After I struggled to get interviews I tried all sorts of ways to stand-out
and with the mindset of never-losing and I will do whatever it takes I got 3 offers after 2 weeks of massive action.

So this is what I'm going to teach people, and LinkedIn is saturated with people who struggle with this problem. It's not just me thinking it's a good idea, there are signs from the market.
It's also saturated with people who do what I do so it's going to be interesting.

Future plans

I know this is not fastlane yet, but I have a lot of plans to scale.

Since developers earn $50K-$100K in their first job, I can charge way more than my initial price.
My plan is after gaining more experience and getting people results to charge $1K per client and even more.
Then I can create an online product and automate the coaching.
Then I can find problems I can solve to my clients with software and maybe have memberships.
The options are limitless so it's going to be amazing!

And even if this idea will not work, it feels good to "feel the market" and take action.

There is a lot more I want to share but this is it for now :--)

Btw, if you want to get feedback on your sales pitch or just to practice,
we can do a mocking sales call on Skype or Google Meet.

  • My advice for everyone who is just starting out (including myself) is to just pick something. Experience is GOLD. Engaging with the market is going to teach you soooo much. Later you can change your biz model and use the skills you learned but start with something.

- Jonathan

Congrats.

Caveat, the "Then I can create an online product and automate the coaching.", step might be hard.

I don't think that programmers that a used to dig deep to find what they want, would pay for videos or program.

The differentiation of your service is that its live human (You) on the other side.

But if i'm wrong, i would welcome it and congratulate you on your success.

You might be right but I know people in this industry who sale courses and are doing good.
In any case, I will do a few beta programs and see how the market reacts.
But I still have a long long way to get to this point.

Thanks for the comment!

August Summary Week 3

Every week I do an analysis for the current week so I know what to improve for the next week. So here are a few things that happen this week.

8 Calls with prospects
1 Client paid me around $60 with Paypal (The first client ever, this is cool!)

I posted 6 times on LinkedIn here are the stats:

12 Private messages from people who read the posts
7 Scheduled a call after I chatted with them

I also sent private messages to people, here are the stats:

45 Messages sent
12 Responded
3 Scheduled a call

Goals for this week:

1. At least 2 calls every day
2. Post 4-5 times on LinkedIn
3. Close a client for $100
4. Get results for my first client and maybe have another session with him

- As you can see posting on LinkedIn as the best performance for me and I also like the write those posts.

- On top of that, I also know that if I don't have enough calls I can send around 30 messages and get 2~3 calls scheduled.

(ok, that's a bit off, i know, but some time in a future you could do a programmer meetings instead of coaching 1-to-1, you could dectuple your time!)*

*Really, really sorry if that's too off.

@JonathanMiz Any tips, tricks, or thoughts about organic reach on Linkedin? I've heard the hype about it but there don't seem to be any good guides talking about how the algorithm works. Is it purely about writing in a captivating way or is there some sort of hashtag wizardry?

I can tell you what works for me.

  1. Connecting with people related to the content you are going to post. It can give you good initial exposure when you post and if it's a good post LinkedIn will show it to more people.
  2. In my posts, I tell stories that people who are in my network can relate to and have chances to like and read. Stories work very well if you talk about the pain points of other people
  3. If you have good engagement(Likes, comments, etc..) on your posts, LinkedIn is exposing you to more people
  4. Right now I use hashtags with a broad audience but I'm not sure if it makes a lot of difference

Sorry for typo: it should be programmerS meetings, like take 10 programmers and do group coaching (if such thing is a thing)
Sure, I might do it in the future but for now, I must focus on 1-on-1 and get people results.

Last week of August Update

This week was awesome! A few interesting things happened:

  • For some reason, I lost momentum with the LinkedIn algorithm and my posts got fewer views and fewer engagements. I'm still exploring why it happened and how to get the momentum back. (you can see below the numbers of this week )
  • I started using a different format for messaging people and it works insanely good! It increased my response rate from 26.666% to 40.22% and I do it mostly by asking them about their pain point which strikes a nerve and they respond
  • This week I broke a record with the number of calls I did. I had 12 calls with prospects which is cool because in the whole month of July I had 11 calls. No one closed tough.
  • I got a bit frustrated this week because people seem to be excited about what I have to offer but they don't have the money. I'm not sure if it's a financial problem or my offer is not valuable enough for them.
  • By the end of the week, I changed my offer a little bit. Instead of being vague, I now sell a solid solution. Instead of only teaching them what to do, I now offer to be with them until they land the job they want.
  • I already got positive feedback for that from 2 people I had calls with. One told me he can afford it ($497 for 4-8 weeks) but he wasn't sure about my credibility because after all, I'm just a stranger from the internet. This is an objection I'm still trying to figure out.
  • Another cool way I found to make more calls is to message people who are online and once they respond to try to set a call with them immediately, this tactic worked pretty well and got me 4-5 spontaneous calls this week
  • The good thing about making calls with your target audience is you can understand their needs and desires and can improve the way you sell and market to them. Even if my service right now will not work I will have a better understanding of what they need.

Numbers of this week

  • Posts on LinkedIn ->
4 Posts -> 2,115 Views, 8 Likes, 0 Comments, 1 private message, 0 calls.

  • Direct messaging on LinkedIn ->
92 Messages
37 Responses (40.22% conversion rate)
6 Calls (16.22% conversion rate)

  • 12 Calls with prospectes -> 0 Closes

Goals for next week

  1. Qualify prospects better in terms of money, urgency, and need before getting to the sales call
  2. Every day: Do at least 2 calls, send 20 messages to potential prospects, create content for LinkedIn, and max-out my connections on LinkedIn.
  3. Close a client for my 4-8 weeks service for $497

Find 3 people that you're willing to coach for free. Have a written and video testimonial.

Yes, I was thinking about doing that.
Up until now I got maybe 2 prospects to ask for testimonials so I'm going to wait with that approach.
My plan is to do 20-30 calls this month, according to the feedback and patterns I will change my strategy.

Right now out of the 4 calls I did using a new offer, 3 of them told me they need to check their finance before they buy. Maybe some testimonials can help but it's too early to know.

Thanks!

First Week Of September - Closed My FIrst High Ticket Client :fire::fire:

So a lot of things happened this week after I took nice action.

1. So after I changed my offer last week, things have changed dramatically.
The sales calls became better and people started asking me for a price.
I got the same objection for 4 times "Can you give me more time to think about it?"
I tried to give them 24-48 hours to get back to me but for now, It's not working.
But I have some other ways of handling this, I'm going to check it this week.
2. My response rate improved and it's now at 64%.
This week I decided to focus more on qualifying prospects.
So what I do is I'm asking them a series of questions and if they answer correctly to my taste I give them a chance to schedule a call with me.

3. CLOSED A CLIENT FOR 500$ FOR 5 WEEKS OF TRAINING

And then this happened.
Yesterday I had a call with a prospect and it went smoothly.
She asked if she can pay in 2 installments so I agreed.
After I sent her the link to PayPal I was a bit stressed.
Then after a few moments, I get the mail from PayPal.
I refreshed my PayPal account and I saw the money OMG
I'm still afraid that she might cancel LOL but even if she does I now have a better process for closing clients.

34752

Now my whole purpose in life is to get my client the best results.

There are a lot more things I can share but I don't have much time so if you have a question about the process and everything let me know.

Numbers of this week

  • Posts on LinkedIn ->
3 Posts -> 1,905 Views, 9 Likes, 2 Comments, 0 private message, 0 calls.

  • Direct messaging on LinkedIn ->
59 Messages
38 Responses (64.41% conversion rate)
4 Calls (10.53% conversion rate)

  • 11 Calls with prospectes -> 1 Close

Goals for next week

  1. Qualify prospects better in terms of money, urgency, and need before getting to the sales call
  2. Every day: Do at least 1 call with qualified prospects, send 20 messages to potential prospects, create content to LinkedIn, and max-out my connections on LinkedIn.
  3. Get results to my new client

Second Week Of September

This week was very challenging but ended with a lot of ideas.
On 9/8/2020, I had my 24th (6 years left :--)) birthday, and let me tell you, that was one of my worst days in a while hahaha

The first part of the week

It was bad.
The client I closed last week, took the time to sign the agreement and I felt like he might cancel. He sent me a message on Tuesday saying he will not be able to pay for the whole program because his current job cut his working hours.
In addition, the task of connecting and sending messages to people on LinkedIn became mundane and boring and it's hard finding people who qualify for everything I look for in a client.
On top of that, I had a call with a local prospect who told me he is working with some other dude. I started checking that other product and it looked very similar to mine. I don't think I'm making something new here but It was a bit discouraging.

The second part of the week

It was awesome.

I managed to tell my client we can do only 2 sessions and he doesn't have to pay for the rest.
After doing our first session, I felt amazing. Finally, I started helping someone and give value.
It's also cool because now I'm starting to form a process for getting results to other people. I felt like he was very satisfied.
After that session I felt inspired, all sorts of amazing ideas came to my mind, I started writing ideas for 2 hours and some of them are GOLD. I decided to start work on a small app that will help my clients, it's not so complicated but I can see that scaling to something huge.
After I will develop everything and make it user friendly, I plan on using this app in my funnel. Those who are not willing to buy yet, I give them free access to my app for a while and warming them to a future close.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Plans and ideas are fine, now it's time to make it real :bicep:
This is my dream life. Building software, helping people, and making awesome money.

Numbers of this week

  • Posts on LinkedIn ->
3 Posts -> 3,582 Views, 20 Likes, 2 Comments, 3 private message, 1 calls.

  • Direct messaging on LinkedIn ->
40 Messages
28 Responses (70% conversion rate)
3 Calls (10.71% conversion rate)

  • 3 Calls with prospectes -> 0 Close

Goals for next week

  1. Every day: Do at least 1 call with qualified prospects, send 15-20 messages to potential prospects, create content to LinkedIn, and max-out my connections on LinkedIn.
  2. Get results to my new client
  3. Develop my app

Being active on the forum?

Since my recent post in September, a lot has changed, I'm not going to bore you with all the details.

TL;DR didn't do much money but took action every day for at least 40-45 hours a week

So far I've done around $1000, not including expenses and so on...

I've been learning a lot about marketing and email marketing specifically.

Currently, I have a coaching subscription product where I help junior software developers find their first full-time position.

I give people content based on what I see they need,
I coach them 1-on-1,
I got them to a Facebook group,
and make sure they're getting results.

So far I had one guy (out of the 5 clients I worked with) who landed 2 positions in 60 days which was an amazing feeling!

Built my first few funnels ever and my current one is converting 2 out of 100,
but the numbers are not precise enough since only around 100 people got in the funnel in total.

I found out that doing 1-on-1 calls is way more efficient for me since automation
is really a skill that takes time to master.

Quit my job?

Since March I negotiated my way to work 4 days a week with the same pay which is amazing because I have 1 full day to keep working on this business, and the plan is to reduce more days until this side business replaces my income. And if not I can fund myself for 2 years without working (saved a lot + low monthly expenses)

Quitting my product?

I've been thinking lately to change strategy,
while it's true that my product is not unique at all
a few people bought it so something with my marketing isn't working quite well
but there is a need and demand

I think because my niche is saturated with the same services as mine
I need to have at least a unique marketing point

So I decided to stop promoting my funnel and this week I start doing some market research
and find out what people really want instead of trying to give them what I want...

Struggles

Getting new leads is hard since this niche is saturated with a lot of other services like mine
that have way more experience and social proof than me

That's one of the reasons I price my offer ten times less than others who offer 1-on-1 coaching or the alike services.

This leads to another problem: getting people results, after I do convert them there are a few problems:

1. Because my marketing sucks I can't really build a community because I can close one client at a time haha
2. If I don't bug people every day, they will simply don't take action and don't get results

I actually got pretty confident in my abilities to help these people and
I actually believe if they work with me and follow the instructions they will get results,
haha but the skill here is to make them work with me...

Goals

Building a $500 product people want and closing 6 new customers every month = $3,000/mo
to become financially free and quit my job.

Hey man, good to see you out there working hard and trying to help people and struggling through it.

Would I be correct in saying you may be following Sam Ovens consulting style? May be wrong here.

I think you would be a great consultant I just think you have chosen something that doesn't seem to be high in demand or people don't value for many reasons. I find the best courses/consulting that does well are when its something very very specific and has an almost guaranteed outcome (or at least perceived) with a large upside. Whilst this can be for someone landing a new job, they are usually doing most of the legwork themselves anyway.

Have you thought about doing some consulting or courses in actual software development? What languages and skills have you got already? What type projects have you worked on and what do you think people could work well with there?

Hi Jonathan,

first of all thanks for sharing! Your mentality of just keeping on track and constantly pursuing prospects is inspiring.

I have a question: do you offer your prospects some kind of satisfaction guarantee? Like a full refund if they didn’t get a desired position in XX days? I think this might help them to engage.

Also - the people you’ve helped - ask them for a recommendation. They might now someone with a similar problem or at least other programmers who might have a job but aren’t very satisfied with their current situation. You could even give a small bonus to those who generated leads that led to a close.

One last idea/question: write an ebook guide on how to do marketing on LinkedIn. I really like your methods and would love to implement some of it. You could make it a paid ebook or something like that.

Keep it on & all the best!

Have you thought about doing some consulting or courses in actual software development? What languages and skills have you got already? What type projects have you worked on and what do you think people could work well with there?

I mixed a few ideas from Sam Ovens and Alex Becker so you're not wrong:--)

You might be right about the demand and maybe it's not a too painful problem
Sometimes it depends since some people try to land
their first job for a few months (even a year) and aren't making progress or feel frustrated.

Currently, I'm a mobile developer specializing in native iOS with swift
and native Android with Kotlin and Java. I've built some tools with Angular ,
Python and Java servers but most of my experience is in mobile.

Not sure about the software development course since there are so many of them.

I was thinking to try B2B, in the startup I work for I've noticed our CTO is struggling to
find good full-stack developers, he did tens of interviews and it took him 6+ months to hire
so I've been thinking I'll be kind of a headhunter, will find good people for CTOs of small startups,
will do the interviewing and will qualify them before they get to the CTO.

I have a question: do you offer your prospects some kind of satisfaction guarantee? Like a full refund if they didn’t get a desired position in XX days? I think this might help them to engage.

I do offer a 7-day free trial + 30 days refund guarantee if they're not satisfied for any reason.
I guess I didn't expose myself to many people to really know if the offer works or not,
all the leads I got were manual with private messages or content, nothing paid yet.

Also - the people you’ve helped - ask them for a recommendation. They might now someone with a similar problem or at least other programmers who might have a job but aren’t very satisfied with their current situation. You could even give a small bonus to those who generated leads that led to a close.

I did a successful interview with the guy who got results so I have this.
I do need to ask for more recommendations but I guess if the product was
amazing, it would happen organically isn't it?

One last idea/question: write an ebook guide on how to do marketing on LinkedIn. I really like your methods and would love to implement some of it. You could make it a paid ebook or something like that.

That's a pretty good idea!
I think I still have a lot to learn on LinkedIn content as
I can't get consistent engagement on my posts.
1 out of ~5 posts might get 2000~5000 views, which is nice numbers.

What do you think right now is the most painful and present problem you have with LinkedIn marketing?

Thanks!

LinkedIn Locked My Account - A lesson from today

LinkedIn every few weeks is restricting my account, so now I don't have ACCESS to my profile...
I viewed many profiles and they have a strict system to monitor that to protect users from
scrapers and so on...

As MJ teaches when you don't have full control you can go out of business with 1-click

This lockdown has actually given me more info on how to avoid it,
if you go directly to a profile AKA open it in a new tab for 20-30-40 times,
you'll be logged out. So instead of going directly, search the profile in the search box
and go from there, this is safer.

Screenshot_1.png

Luckily for me I have other ways to engage my target audience so I can work on that until I the lock is over...
