Is it just me or did UpWork get significantly harder to get accepted? I remember in the past it was a breeze to get accepted, last night my profile got rejected for the fourth time.

Yes, somehow it did, as we talked a bit in Sinister’s thread. Do look up on those.

Lex figured the platform was shutting out folks from Asia and similar places. Not to say they don’t have good skills, but to reduce the shitty freelancer spam from those regions.

Or it could be the market for the particular skill.

For example, ‘copywriting’ may be tapped out, but ‘sales funnel strategist’ may not be.

‘Virtual assistant’ is definitely very common, but not ‘Project Management’. I didn’t know there was an entire world behind it, and actual certifications like PMP are in decent demand, until I took one college unit on that.

Anyways, doing Hubspot stuff could be technically considered Project Management though, at least for CRM.

Try to think about a different angle of your skill set, or an ‘advanced form’ for it.

EDIT: Sorry, what field are you applying for? Marketing? Design?

Software Development specifically with e-commerce development in the Shopify ecosystem.

Ok...Shopify...strange.
Don’t think it would be saturated.

Is that your intended write-up for Upwork's profile, BTW?

Yes, automate, but with what?

Cart abandonment pop-ups? Chatbots? CRM or autoresponders?
TBH, I feel a bit confused when you said both Shopify and software developer.

I don't think setting up Shopify systems are too complex to involve the expertise of software developers. unless they want to do eye-tracking or something advanced. Might be more related to web design, IMO.

A quick search on Upwork tells me that a more precise term to use might be Shopify creator/designer.
And many of the existing Upwork folks offer alternative services for similar platforms like Woocommerce or Magento.

Try to look into the various caveats of Shopify, instead of mashing it with software development, and focus your Upwork profile as such. Looking at the competitors' offerings on Upwork, it may not always require software dev as a skill.

Automation in the sense of creating Shopify applications that use APIs to automate their processes in Shopify and/or business. Honestly, if they need something automated it doesn’t have to be in Shopify. I think about their problem, think about the technology I need and then solve it. I emphasize Shopify because most of my experience is within the Shopify ecosystem.

UpWork has a number of factors that influence whether you're accepted. Often it's because they want to weed out bad talent or scam profiles. However, it's not against the rules to apply for one skill and then immediately switch it to another once you're accepted. Perhaps you can try that?

Also, to help give you an idea of the kind of profile UpWork is looking for, here's a screenshot of some of the top talent for Shopify.

I got rejected 30+ times lol.
Many times with different skill sets.

I'm from the Middle East though.

Just don't let them stop you from online freelancing. Keep trying and try other platforms. There's a gold thread somewhere.

Hi @Bud Fox, yes, the majority of my experience is within Shopify and I've dealt with mainly private Shopify applications. This means the applications I build are not going live on the Shopify store to be installed or purchased. They'd only be custom solutions that are only usable by the store that hired me.

I've read your job post and if I were to take on the job, I'd need to know more about how your company works, more of the specifics, I'd need to see references and examples of what you'd want to be done. To be realistic with you, it's going to cost significantly more than $1,000. It's a large project with a lot of moving pieces. It'd take time quite some time.

If I were to take that on, I'd probably hire an employee or team member to help me with it. If you have any more questions, feel free to private message me.

Haha I find that even in copywriting, it would be great for myself to rope in either a market research guy, graphic designer or video expert. That should help me cater for a larger range of interesting clients...but by then, it would no longer be considered a hustle any more, and more towards an agency.

Somehow agencies aren't on my plate.

To each their own, right? :) I think there's definitely risk when hiring, but it's all about finding the right team. To be honest, I'd be more happy doing more of "growing the business" side of work than actual development. I like development, but I know I can do more in actual business. That's why I'd be fine with hiring.
