I’m 34 years old, and I’ve been living with my parents for the past two years. I moved back in with the hopes of saving money while going to school for data science, which I’ve since become very disillusioned with and quit. Why did I become disillusioned?

Well, several months ago on a vacation I read Tim Ferriss’ book, The 4-hour Workweek, which made me first realize that there is life outside of scripted misery. The only reason I wanted the degree in the first place was to escape my family’s business and get some other job, but now I realize that a different kind of freedom, true F*ck-you-freedom, exists.

I’ve whittled away at business ideas for months now trying to find my “muse,” with no luck whatsoever. It wasn’t until reading Demarco’s books that I realized the problem…

I’ve been looking for easy. I’ve been selfish. True value is what I want to create now, and that’s why I’m here.

I was skeptical of the forum before reading, thinking that contributors were going to try to talk me into selling steak knives or some bullshit, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised after lurking for a bit by the community and MJ’s involvement.

Anywho, I’m glad to be here and hope to meet and be inspired by like-minded people on my search for value, freedom and Lamborghini’s. Cheers.

Ha Ha, sounds like you've been other places. There's some selling at the forum, but it's mostly confined to the marketplace and in a few signatures. Other than that, we try to keep the spam and self-promotion to a minimum.
Glad you given us a chance and you liked what the forum is about.

Welcome my friend.

Welcome and totally with you, man! There are so many different paths to freedom and it's about finding the best and shortest one for you... that may or may not include a degree. Looking forward to following your progress!

I've thought about this quite a bit, and I struggle to see it as a viable option.

I don't really feel like I'm creating anything that will satisfy me by doing that. I would like my own business, started under my own steam.

Also, I got along better with my dad and brother when we weren't working together. We've had a lot of bad, blow-up arguments over silly shit in the business, and I'd like to at least confine our arguments to Thanksgiving and Christmas, like normal people.

Fair enough. Maybe knowing something about their business will give you a viable B2B idea that you can test out. Things they struggle with, or things you think could be better, sans the emotional investments people have in being right. Good luck :)

Anything in your family's business that you can leverage in a new business, that you solely control?

See any opportunities there?

Nothing immediately comes to mind. I'm basically just a manager at this point with little control, but lots of influence. My older brother is next in line in terms of control/ownership.

Maybe I'm not completely clear about what you mean, I'm going to think about it a little more. Do you mean like assets or systems?

“Intrapreneurship” is the process of finding needs needing satisfying within an existing business.

Maybe the fam business is constantly seeing other needs being unfulfilled, but it isn’t designed to fill those needs.

What pain points do your existing clients have. What keeps them up at night. What do you wish your customers had that would make their businesses better.

Wait, I do Data Science... why did you quit school? Data Science is completely compatible with a fastlane business. There are a few members on here working on AI-based startups. Unless you really hated it, I would go back and finish. I mean don't go to school for it, but finish learning it. You can certified from Harvard's Data Science Initiative for like $450.

Doing a Fastlane or 4HWW doesn't mean you don't need a skillset. Those things will help you immensely.

Also, wanna buy a steakknife?

I guess I knew that the skill was compatible, but I was only focused on the jobs and student loan debt. Also I never really got past entry level java classes because I kept bouncing around majors like a dumbass.

I had no clue that this existed, and I'm going to check this out.

I really appreciate you posting this, it amazes me how I've completely overlooked this as something viable.

Only if it comes with a timeshare.

Yea, feel free to message me. I have boatloads of resources for Data Science. I mean I got the certification just to have something to show, but the reality is that I've never even needed it really. People just want to know that you're capable, and posting a few projects on GitHub goes much further than having a formal certification.

I mean Java? I don't even understand even understand what Java has to do with DS. You will never use Java. My guess is that they just want to milk students to take as many fluff classes as possible so they have something to bill you for. Just jump right into python or R. You'll learn so much more that way.

My wife sells physical products, and it's a much simpler route. Nothing you do will be easy, but it's simpler to wrap your head around a physical good you can hold in your hand, than some abstractions around data and AI.

I totally agree, and I really like the design aspect to physical products. I've got a lot to think about lol. I might just do the Harvard Certification mentioned above or something similar to give myself time to think.

There are other options too

DataCamp is good

But my absolute#1 favorite favorite favorite is this site:

Oh yea, and this guy did an data analysis of the best data science courses on the net, which may be helpful:

check his other articles too

Yea if they're teaching you Java for DS in college, gtfo there lol. I mean maybe they're just trying to teach you the fundamentals of coding or want you to be 'well rounded' but whatever... in my opinion it's not the best use of your time. learn the fundamentals of python or R

if you want to be rounded just learn the philosophy of science rather than languages you'll never use in practice

oh btw, if you need to choose between python or R, consider what you're gonna do... python is better for apps and startups and stuff, R is better for academic research

Another thing I've noticed is... python users tend to prefer Android/Linux/PC while R users tend to prefer iPhone/mac. I think this reflects fundamental personality differences and is an easy mental shortcut.

Oh yea, and if you do choose R, I wrote this post which will save you time. Learn the tidy verse first:

I use windows for R though...

Still works fine.

On a slight note, Rob Hyndman, the guy who came up with the fpp2 package for time series analysis, is popping by at my university for a talk around end of this week!

F*cking rare treat, as he'll be discussing more on alternative methods for time series (seems that the classic models have their shortcomings). I might share some notes on that here, if I got time.

Also, another Analytics speaker is coming around the same time, and word from my lecturer is that she's actually mentored the PhD student who came up with the Tidyverse.

Didn't really understood what the Tidyverse stood for until my lecturer showed me a pretty neat concept called 'pipe operators'...great for inputting multiple functions within another function without effing long lines of code.

there are exceptions, and I'm not saying R works better or worse on Windows.. what I mean is: I've noticed that the personality types that are typically drawn to iOS/macOS are drawn to R, while the personality types that are drawn to Android are typically drawn to python. It has to do with their design philosophies.

Tidyverse is god. Tidyverse is hands down my most used package. I have it in my .RProfile to load every time I start R. ALL of the packages.

That's just an icicle on the iceberg.

2) Create muscle memory for the commands you use. Never ever ever copy and paste commands you’re trying to learn.

help() function can also be a good assistant. Even my lecturer still uses it whenever he forgets a command every now and then.

Just type in a keyword or abbreviation of the stuff you want to do, like a seasonal or subseries plot...

And then a prompt will just jump out, with the suggested parameters and explanations.

It's not something I found in Python before, so I was glad R had such a thing to make it a little smoother.
