Hello, Fastlaners!

I've been lurking here for a few weeks. The vibe and spirit here are amazing!

I'm from Denmark, 34. I'm doing talks, events, music, blogs about philosophical issues. I have an MA in philosophy. I like to grow this business. Now I'm working on a website, which is almost done. I have a lot of material. I have developed a new talk about the Philosophy of Innovation (How do we implement an idea? What values drive an entrepreneur? What is the historical breeding ground for innovation (capitalism, industrial revolution etc.))?

It is a challenge to do it (write and talk) in English and to get into the business world, but I'm very enthusiastic about the possibilities I see as I move in this direction.

Next step is to sell my talk. To get out to corporations, and hopefully inspire them with new perspectives on innovation and entrepreneurship. On sight, I could imagine working as a consultant, writing books, making podcasts etc.

Right now I make a living from playing the guitar. I play jazz guitar at weddings, birthdays, receptions etc. It's a lot of fun. And music has been a huge passion since my teens. I think I always will play gigs and have fun with that, but right now my mind is completely obsessed with getting my ideas about philosophy out there.

I'm looking very much forward to contribute to, and be part of, this forum of great ideas and encouragement!

Welcome to the forum! Pretty cool you can make a living playing guitar. I guess not all artists are starving.

Welcome!

What were some of the key takings from obtaining a MA in philosophy? When did you know you wanted to study this?

I see that I liked this post but didn't actually respond to you, which is weird (but the date was a very busy time for me, so that's probably why).

Anyway, obvious joke to get out of the way: I guess your thesis was on Kierkegaard?

Who are you looking at for your work on innovation? Dreyfus wrote a few things on entrepreneurship, since skill and practice were always his things... anybody else doing interesting things here?

Welcome!

Thank you!

The key takings from my MA in philosophy were for me:

1. Learning to analyze and interpret large amounts of complex information
2. Critical thinking

I think I was at the beginning of my 20s when I decided to study philosophy. At that time I didn't really know what I wanted to do with it, but I was fascinated by big, abstract ideas. And at the end of the BA I got into Nietzsche's philosophy and philosophy of art, and during the MA I got further into these topics.

Thank you for your interest!

Actually, my innovation material is a bit on hold at the moment. I have been focusing on building my web page and social media appearance in the last couple of months, so most of my material is about music and philosophy. You are very welcome to check it out on my facebook page:

Haha, close. My thesis was on Nietzsche.

With regards to innovation, a Danish entrepreneur called Lars Tvede has inspired me a lot. He has written some very intersting books on creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Especially his book The Creative Society" is great.

I didn't know Dreyfus has written on that topic, I will look into that.

Thanks for the reference on Tvede, I'll give him a look.

The Dreyfus stuff I'm thinking of was from the 90s. It doesn't look like he did much with it, but here's the paper, and there are some replies in the same issue:

Spinosa, Charles, Fernando Flores, and Hubert Dreyfus. “Disclosing New Worlds: Entrepreneurship, Democratic Action, and the Cultivation of Solidarity.” Inquiry 38, no. 1–2 (June 1, 1995): 3–63. https://doi.org/10.1080/00201749508602373.

It will probably far too philosophical (surprise surprise) for any practical uses, but there's a whole self-help industry built around this so who knows.
