What greatly emotionally attached object have you sold to start up your business?

And did it have appreciating value?

Im considering selling something I have to help fund my startup due to unforseen family expenses eating up part of my startup's original fund. Problem is it continues to go up in value, and finding a replacement will literally cost me 2-3 times what Id be able to currently sell it for since its current condition is poor. So Im mostly curious if others have also had to make a great sacrifice like this and either never looked back or were able to eventually find their item's replacement.

Selling something your emotionally attached to comes with some complex choices and a few simple questions, in my opinion.

1. Do you need it?
2. How bad do you want to succeed?

If you need it. You may consider taking a slower route to your goal.
This can be ball and chain sometimes letting material items control your path, but sometimes we love things and it’s just not their time to go.

If you do succeed you can always re-buy this item you wanted.
If you sold said item, where you would be in 1-2 years time? Is this going to help to achieve your goals in a manner you believe you could replace this in a timely fashion?

1. Not at all
2. VERY badly. I was laid off and was going to use my severance for the startup.

I probably wont be able to buy it back wihin a year. 2 years possibly. 3 years I better be making enough income to be able to buy it back. It will help in paying for home expenses while the current funds are used for inventory for the startup as opposed to my house eating up the startup funds.

Problem is its value. Currently its worth $7k-$10k. If I spent about $1k-$3k then it will be worth $15k-$20k. And ones in great condition have sellers currently asking for $20k-$40k and UP. So I NEED to succeed. And if I sold it I KNOW Id eventually be back in the market for one but at a huge price difference.

I prefer not to say what it is. Some get attached to certain things all depending on their history with it and how they have lived their life with it which is in conjunction with the person's lifestyle/hobbies. One man's treasure is another man's dispossible object. So I prefer to keep it as objective as possible. :smile2:

The fact that you talk about it’s value and buying one back later tells me it’s not the actual object but the value in dollars that it’s worth that you care about.

The value of a sentimental object is the actual object. It can’t be replaced and another replica is not the same, it must be the exact one.

I only mentioned its value because of the increased difficulty there will be in replacing it. Its value to me is in the unmeasurable amount of fun Ive had with it in my hobby for over 2 decades. I dont have a problem replacing it with the same thing later on because of how satisfied I know I will be with the results.

I guess one could say Im emotionally attached to the level of satisfaction Ive received from said object, and I dont have a problem in replacing said object with the same object. But the replacement can literally be 2-4 times what I can get for it at the moment.

I honestly got the same feeling that it's a car.
As I've been in the same scenario. I had about 15k invested in a non-running rare car. a mere 4k dollar investment would turn the car into a 25k$ HOT ticket.

Would I have sold the car If I needed the money? You bet.
If I can afford to keep it as a leisure item, slightly due to attachment, I would.
But will I let it hold me back from success? you bet not. Sounds like you need to let it go and focus on your "Process".

Ill say Im about 90% there in letting go. Seeing replies such as yours is what is helping me reach that 100% by knowing Im not the only one who made a similar sacrifice in getting my "process" started up. :wideyed:

If it's a thing that can be replaced by money, is that worth holding you back? Your time is not something that can be replaced by money.

I weigh what I want by how much I have to work to get it. Everything converts to dollars, if they're things. Dollars convert to time.

Right now I am making sacrifices to ramp up a business that will provide passive income soon. I can forego having "things" for a while in order to build my cash cow that will raise my lifestyle. It's a no brainer.

On the other side of the argument is time. I was lied to so many times over the past decade, it makes me sick. Those years are gone forever. But not one more. Not one more. That's why I'm here - I'm doing something about how I was misled and wasted so much time.

I keep telling myself, it could have been worse. And I also tell myself that things are going to get a whole lot better. That keeps me focused and positive.

There is no "thing" worth holding you back. Let. it. go.
