I ran a competition like this over the last week and here are the results:

Prize value approximately $150
Ad spend $225
Revenue generated $200
Comments on post over 500
Entries into competition over 400

Then I think that's where you should focus next time.

This type of campaign is a "top of funnel" campaign. That means that you should give them an irresistible offer. And the primary focus should be to acquire new customers without losing money.

So the real question in this campaign is how many customers did you acquire. Then if you know your customers' LTV, you can really see if the campaign is a win or not.

But the key is, to begin with an offer they can't refuse (like the free pass to the gym for X days that the OP did)
