I found MJ's book, The Millionaire Fastlane , for more than a month now. I'm finished with that and almost finished with Unscripted .

Right now, I'm working on my project with the aim of being financially free by adding value ginormous amount of value to society.

The project is a web app. I'm studying web app development, designing the perfect user experience, and perfectly hooking people to the web app. I have no monetization plan yet. My plan is to add value to and hook at least 1 billion people in a year's time. Moon shot I know.

I'm currently on the idea validation phase. I'll survey 500 people to validate my idea.

Since I'm here, I'm going to share with you the idea and would appreciate your feedback on it.

Read this as if you're the user
1. I want to feel hopeful by looking at the good interactions around my area, my country, and the world and knowing the number of good interactions that happens in the world per second
2. I want to contribute in making the world a better place by being helpful, truthful, and kind to people around me whenever I can.
3. I want to reward people with helpfulness, truthfulness, and kindness points if they were helpful, truthful, and kind to me.
4. I want to receive helpfulness, truthfulness, and kindness point if I was helpful, truthful, and kind.
5. I want to add a message whenever I reward goodness points so the receiver would know what's the goodness point for and for the receiver to keep it up.

Honestly, I find my idea cheesy. Maybe you don't feel or think the same. Feedback are welcome.

Mage,

Your idea sounds very idealistic, and not very well planned out. From what I was able to understand, it sounds like you want to create an app where people can reward others for doing positive things in society. Why would I want to receive feedback? Just to feel good about myself? Why would I want to give feedback?

How are you going to track and validate these goodness points? Or are you just going to take people's word for it that something good was actually done?

Also, the idea of good and 'goodness' are very subjective. Not all people define this the same. I don't mean to shoot down your idea, but I think there is a lot more planning and thinking you need to do before you have a serious idea. Targeting everyone in the world is almost too big of a target market. Remember, Facebook started out as a networking site only for Harvard students before it became a multi-billion person network.

I think you need to focus on why people would want to use this app first. And then focus on how it would work in detail.

Hello Jake,

I appreciate your thoughts. I agree with you - the idea needs more refinement.

Right now I'm wondering how to get people to try out the app for the first time and how do I get people to market the product to others.

My visionary customers, those who will use the product in its early stage are men of goodwill, of peaceful and loving intentions, men of intelligent kindness and goodness. And from there, figure out how I can serve and add value to others.

Users would want to receive feedback to feel good about themselves - a dopamine source, and to create a habit of good behaviour, ie being more helpful, kind, and/or truthful.

"Why would I want to give feedback"
That's a good question. I don't have an answer yet. Will think about it.

"Why would I want to give feedback"
That's a good question. I don't have an answer yet. Will think about it.

My favorite way to learn is by doing and trying. I didn't do any keyword research, or analysis, etc. when I launched my first blog 6 months ago. I have yet to do any sort of social media marketing. What I did was create value, and by doing so, I started to rank well in google and receive organic backlinks. Now in just 6-months I'm trending at 3,000 uniques a month.

How long do you estimate the app will take you to development? I started my blog in a day, so doing it the way I did it was low-risk. If this is something that is going to take tens or hundreds of hours to develop and market, then you should do some market testing first. But I don't think a survey is a good place to start. People saying that they want to feel good about themselves and reward others for doing good, does not mean that they will use an app to do so.

I got an answer to your previous question: "Why would I want to give feedback"
Just like Facebook posts, Instagram, or Twitter posts, you like post just because you're compelled to. Because you "like" them.

Optimistically, I think I could develop the app in 3-4 months.
Then what do you think will compel them to use the app? Based on my research, if the app is something useful, rewarding, easy to use, and motivates people to invest energy on it, then people would continue using the app.

My question now is how do I get them on board first. Providing "hope" to people seems like a cheesy endeavour but that is what it will be about. Seeing that there are a lot of good things happening in the world would make people feel more hopeful. And maybe, in line with the recent suicides of famous people (Kpop star and Linkin Park vocalist), give them more reason to hold on.

Won't fly. Check socially conscious businesses and their revenue. Speaking of revenue, how would you earn?

And btw, most people prefer "doing good" anonymously. Every one on such app would be seen as fake.

My 3 cents.

Have you done something notable?

I see the critic was too harsh.

Look, i see you are dreamer. You want to do something big. If you want 1bln people, the VC will tell you the same, but then you will not be able to question them.

You ask for validation. You have 1 vote against - and 499 to go.

I think you are a little too optimistic on this, and possibly put a bit too much faith in the inherent good inside of people. I agree with @Kid, but am trying to not shoot your idea down without understanding it better.

But first, I think you will struggle to get people to use the app. What happens if I have the app, and the person I want to give or get points from doesn't and thinks its a stupid idea?

The majority of people in this world are selfish, and aren't going to go out of their way to make other people feel good about themselves.

Also, the generating revenue piece is another hard one.

I really appreciate the feedback. Harsh, but it helps in the refinement process. For now I have to figure out the answer to your questions. I have to figure out how to make it look valuable so people would exert effort to join the app and participate in it.

Agreed. And you might find a way to do so. And you might not. That is the process of brainstorming and that's how business works. There are many times I get excited about an idea, only to sit down and think more deeply into it and realize it isn't really an opportunity or that there isn't a good way to execute on the idea.

You have to lay all the pieces of the puzzle out, and be able to put them together. Sometimes you might have all of the pieces, but they simply won't fit.

That's the way I feel about this app.
I would probably be very irritated if somebody tried to compensate me for being a decent person. Like what the hell, I did this because I wanted to, not for a miniscule amount of internet fame

Go ahead. Do it.

Whether or not the idea is well planned or not doesn't matter, there are only 2 outcomes:
1) The idea and execution is a huge hit, you nailed it or
2) You realize that your idea has just too many holes. I am fairly certain you'll realize that in a timely fashion. You will start something else, now, with more experience and knowledge.

You've got nothing to lose.

Better start something now than be paralyzed from choosing an idea. In the beginning, it's alright if nothing goes right.

There's actually alot information about how money changes our behavior. Many studies have been completed and the psychology knows many things about this topic.

A great read is "Mind over money" by Claudia Hammon, who summarizes hundreds of articles in her book. The free version of this information should be in any library of a psychology department (university).

You might want to check this out as rewarding is a well studied psychology phenomenon.

Reading the book now.

You wouldn't know if I'm being nice because of the rep money I'll get or because I'm inherently nice. Nevertheless, it promotes good behaviour. And what people see, people will imitate.

I'm on the first pages of the book and I find it extremely valuable already. Thanks Mike!

Mage,

I am new like you, but may I make a suggestion here? Why don't you try to narrow your focus to a specific group and see if you can get buy in with them. Just off the top of my head, how about something like the Boy Scouts where they get merit badges -- this could be a way for them to track progress, etc. You could prove your concept on a micro-scale. Perhaps if you can clearly articulate your value proposition you can find 50 Scout Masters to phone survey on your app before you build it.

Also, it's great to do a free app for adoption but I would highly recommend you line out your monetization strategy and conversion points before hand. Best of luck!

Thank you for your feedback.

why do you highly recommend I line out my monetization strategy? I'm thinking of doing it the Instagram way: do not worry about the money first, instead, focus on giving significant value to users and sell the company.

It's good to build things with a destination in mind, even if you sell your ride to someone else along the way! You don't necessarily have to monetize from the start, but you will look better prepared and potentially enlarge the buyer pool if you can provide realistic revenue projections from a sound monetization strategy. Just my $.02.

@Mage I'm just a curious new guy. I haven't finished reading all the responses on the thread but you could consider turning all that "feel good" on the website into a crypto-currency.
If you can find some way to create a block-chain with ledgers of "happiness" you could build a community and from that community build something else.
