Here is a great video about a man who had it all; a highly respected career, exotic cars etc. And yet he wasn't happy. He realized he wasn't living his life according to his own expectations. He left it all behind and did what HE wanted. Great little story.

Hopefully this doesn't turn into a "Does money buy happiness?" pissing contest but rather a little reminder that sometimes we live our lives by a preordained path set out by others and we never really express the inner richness that is sometimes drowned away by external influences.

Do what YOU want.

Great video, Makes me relate it to fitness and body building.

The only reasons I'm working so hard at this point in my life are:

A) Prove to myself that I can learn new skills through hard work, consistency, repetition, focus, open mindedness and drive.
B) Help people on a big scale.
C) Build a succesful company for the first time in my life. Give half the money away to family, friends, charity.

D) Do what I want. Train for fitness competitions and mentor people in that area. Stress free, total process immersion in a flow state. Like the man in the video.

Those are my WHYS

So last night, after watching this video, I had a dream that I was roller skating. I was ok when I needed to skate regular, but when I tried to do that one legged glide thing, I was horrible. LOL. Gotta love dreams.

I loved the video. And I hated it.

a little reminder that sometimes we live our lives by a preordained path set out by others and we never really express the inner richness that is sometimes drowned away by external influences.

The video actually embodies the theme of my next book. Hoorah!

Hopefully this doesn't turn into a "Does money buy happiness?"

Do what YOU want.

Unfortunately, "doing what you want" requires money. This video didn't describe any of that. A studio apartment on the Santa Monica beach has to run about $2K/month. Add in other expenses, health insurance, food, etc, and we are looking at $4G/month -- just to "do what you want". Can anyone here afford to "do what they want" and not have to worry about having roof over their head and a full stomach? I know I can, except my "do what I want" is writing.

The issue I have with the video is it doesn't address the COST of "doing what you want." This guy obviously made a shit ton of money as a neurosurgeon and now he can afford to skate the beach all day, ever day. That's awesome and I totally advocate that. In fact, that's the destination in my next book which boils down to "do whatever the hell you want!". But let's be perfectly honest here: The dudes' a multimillionaire.

The real problem arises when you get some green, fresh-out-of-college 20-something who will watch this video and think "Wow, that's great! I'm going to go do what I want" -- except that 20-something has no money, no life experience, and a shit-ton of debt. I'm sorry but just because you watched a cool video on YouTube doesn't erase the cost of "doing what you want."

I think everyone of us can aspire to this man's level of "do whatever the f*ck I want" which is different for everyone. However, don't skip the most important step which comes down to FINANCING "doing whatever the f*ck you want".

That was a cool/fun video. @MJ DeMarco ... $720,000 at your estimate of $4,000/mo so far for his 15 yrs. Hmm. Not bad.

Not for me, but it's good to see someone doing what they want.

I realised lately that "doing what you love" is an infuriating pile o cr#p.

The difference is
Passion as an obligation is not a good thing
What you want actually has no specific obligations and is agile and can handle finances easy enough

Ok, onto the vid (awesome btw, cheers socaldude), if this guy wasn't a millionaire and made that choice he probably would be a hobo :joyful:
The fact that he is an articulate ex doctor definately helps the credibility of the message.

Follow a passion sounds GREAT for a long time.
But tbh it is an insult to people's intelligence to say "follow your passion", because it is just like saying "you will never enjoy being truly aware, so stay mundane little child".:rage::punch:

Condescending BS

Don't fear learning to control your finances because what you want to do first requires you to be aware of what is good and what you should avoid, from there, what you want will reveal itself.

This video is inspirational, but should be seen as a reward that has to be achieved by hustling your a$$ off.

I think that's why most of us hustle - to gain financial independence and live our lives on our own terms.

However, I think we can enjoy the hustle as much as we will enjoy living our dream. How?

Just decide. Decide to be happy and greatful no matter what!

You have to wake up at 5am, dress up and jump into a crowded bus? Remember: most people have no clothes to put on.
Your supplier is late and you have to deal with angry customers? Remember: you have customers, most people don't.
You just lost your job and walking home crying? Remember: there's thousands of people who are disabled and can't walk.

Yeah, we are hustling and working towards a dream. We're not there yet, but who decides how much fun we can have doing things other people hate? Nobody, but yourself! Hell, even washing dishes can be fun.

Yes, to "live the dream" is to make the dream alive and pursued.
