BECAUSE YOU HAVE IT BACKWARDS...

I've noticed a trend. People read the book, they get excited about all the things they want to HAVE, and then they come to this forum asking some version of "What's next?"

If you look deeper, you see that they are thinking in terms of: Have. Do. Be.

HAVE: They want to HAVE things. They want the car or the house or the pool or the fabulous vacations or the amazing partner or the bank account with a lot of zeros.

DO: Then they ask... What do I need to DO to HAVE all those things? Sell products on Amazon? Invent something? Create a sales funnel? Find a product on Alibaba? Crack the code? Get in the Fastlane? Find a Vehicle?

BE: Then, they say.... If I HAVE all those things by DOING the thing I'm going to do, THEN, I will BE happy... successful... amazing.... giving...

Sorry to break it too you, but that is exactly backwards.

If you are thinking this way, then you are CHASING MONEY. You are NOT creating value, and your desire for happiness will elude you.

What is the solution? FLIP IT ON ITS HEAD...

FIRST: BE

BE the person you want to be.

BE happy by deciding to be happy. It doesn't take the house or the pool or the vacation. It takes you choosing happiness, in that moment. BE an entrepreneur. It doesn't take owning a company you will be taking public next week, or launching a kickstarter campaign, or getting onto shark tank. Sure, those things may come... but that doesn't make you an entrepreneur.

BE an entrepreneur by deciding. Decide to wake up, each and every day and making a decision to RUN your business, or LEARN something that will improve your business, or TAKE the next step - even though it is hard.

BE a philanthropist or missionally oriented by looking at a homeless person in the eye, or taking in a foster child, or giving a loan on Kiva or volunteering for your favorite charity.

The list is endless. WHO do you WANT to be? WHO do you know you are... deep down? Forgiving? Understanding? Motivating? Strong? A leader? A generous person? A compassionate person? A happy person? A family person?

DON'T WAIT to be the person you are meant to be. DO IT NOW. The only thing holding you back is THE DECISION TO DO IT.

THEN: DO

Only when you know the person you ARE. Only when you are BEING the person you are, can you EFFECTIVELY DO.

When you ARE an entrepreneur, then you wake up every day and DO THE WORK of entrepreneurship. You make the calls, solve the problems, develop the systems.

When you ARE giving, you take the time to volunteer at the charity, or listen compassionately, or love deeply.

The act of DOING flows easily from the person you ARE.

The DOING will be creating VALUE, because you are not chasing the all might dollar. You understand that the dollar will come to you when you provide value.

FINALLY: YOU WILL HAVE

Having.... they money, the things, the cars. All these "things" will flow naturally out of your DOING. They will never come to you if you are chasing them with no other motivation or understanding. Or they may come to you temporarily, but they will leave you again soon enough - if you haven't build the foundation you need.

Great post. It took me quite a while to get ahold of this. It helps your happiness dramatically.

With respect to "how to accumulate money" question: I'll have to say that in many ways I totally agree with you. Both The Wife and I have both been extremely poor. So much so that spending $20 on yourself in a month was considered the limit of what you could do. This was true even in residency, let alone medical school. So we definitely know poor. Hell, my wife grew up raising chickens.... ;)

For those of you who have never experienced real poverty I'll bet that it's extremely difficult to imagine being something other than poor. I will tell you that the Sidewalk Mentality is rampant because it seems that nothing is in your control, just like MJ said.

On the other hand, you gotta start somewhere. And for me, that was a burning desire (even before HS was finished) that I Wanted to Do Something Big.

Old goals:

o Succeed in the Marine Corps (done)
o Go to college (done)
o Go to graduate school (done)
o Be a doctor (done, and doing)

It wasn't until I got to my current point (with much more money even though I drive a car a decade old & with 220K miles on it) that I realized it was all still Slowlane because of the lack of control. I had never really imagined myself as an entrepeneur...Then I found @MJ DeMarco 's book and and it was a lens focusing the sunlight into a bright, burning flame... Then I read @Vigilante 's, @JackEdwards ' and @biophase s threads and things just exploded inside my mind.

Having enough money to breathe allowed the mind to consider other possibilities..

I will tell you that when I tell other physicians that being a physician is now my secondary thing they have a really difficult time understanding why I would want to "get out." I understand: you work so hard for so long, why would you leave it? I am plagued by the same doubts...but the fear of being at the mercy of the Man or the Gubmint is greater. And so I press on.....

I'm so glad you posted this. I've taken a similar route. I went into the military, worked for various jobs after, then decided that I needed to become a doctor to finally make the money I dreamt of. It's just not the case. I'm in more debt now than I've ever been. I still can't seem to make ends meet. I feel like I'm in this constant search to find wealth. Every other area of my life is amazing, except money. I don't live extravagant, I don't spend money on unnecessary items. I feel like I'm desperate, listening to everyone out there on how to generate wealth but just not finding it for myself. I visualize my dreams, I'm the most positive person when it comes to my future. I walk around telling myself "I'm already wealthy", but I just feel deep down I'm lying to myself. I know there's no magic trick out there to instant wealth, I'm willing to work for it obviously, I just don't know the direction to take. There's too many paths to choose from to figure out which one is the right one.

Are you apart of the problem? Or part of the solution? I don't see any recent contributions from you. Forums are mostly take with little give. The people complaining are usually the takers. They expect all give from the givers and when the givers don't feel respected, or their advice is ignored (not even a click thanks) or when their shit is stolen, they leave. Forums are like mini-socialist experiments... once everyone sits on the side of TAKE and there is no one left to GIVE, they die.

I understand what you're saying here. However, IMO, you are describing "fake it until you make it" -- that's not what this is advocating. It's advocating becoming someone who you need to become to effect real change.

Exactly. Going on a diet is not excellence. Declaring that you are healthy and will eat, exercise, and live to that standard is. The habit will validate the character change, or expose you as a fraud.

Money didn't change me, the process changed me. Money was the result of that process. I've been an entrepreneur my entire life. It's in my DNA and my character. And half of that life, I've been broke.

Please put this post in perspective of this type of thinking...

"I'm going to give this Fastlane a try!"
"TMF was great, gonna give it a shot"

All the above are signals of failure because you aren't backing your declaration with character. Entrepreneurship has to become apart of your character and essence, and it has nothing to do with money. Fastlane is not something you try, it's something you live. BE. Then DO. Then Have.
Reminds me of Yoda's wisdom "Do or Do NOT - There is NO TRY"

In other words, or for those who TL;DR things... change your identity if you want to change your results.

There's a long thread going on INSIDE about someone struggling with addiction. (Entitled "Self FN Discipline") We mentioned this there -- motivation often falls short and what really needs to go on is an identity change.

For example...

I want to be an entrepreneur.

NO.

You are an entrepreneur.

In the world of health...

I want to be a non-smoker.

NO.

I am a non-smoker.

Then when someone asks, "Cigarette?" It violates your identity to say "Yes" or "Sure, maybe just one." The answer becomes a quick NO.

Motivation is fleeting. Identity is lifelong.
Rep+

"Motivation is fleeting. Identity is lifelong."

Eye opener.

We’ve all heard the cliché expression: “it’s not about the cards, but how you play them.” Like most aphorisms, this is true.

I’m not dumb, but God, sometimes it feels like it. I have a really hard time paying attention, even in simple conversations about the most mundane things. Someone could be telling me about their weekend, and how they spent it painting Easter Eggs with their grandmother, something so incredibly easy to follow, and I just zone out, and can’t hear a word of what they’re saying. If I’m not zoned out, then I’m paying extra careful attention to every word they’re saying, which leads me to not understanding what it is they’re telling me, because it’s like I’m paying attention to the words they’re saying, but can’t string them together to understand what they actually mean. This probably doesn’t make any sense to most of you, but maybe one of you out there knows what I’m talking about.

Another thing I struggle with is mental math, and math forced to be performed on the spot. If I am left alone with a tutor, and really shown how to do math, I can tackle even the most difficult problems. But if someone said “quick, what date is 60 days prior to February 28th?” I could not perform that math mentally. Even if I had a calendar nearby that I could actually count the days, I would still struggle with it just because there’s pressure from someone watching me do it.

My brain is very analytical, and my head instantly fills with thoughts like: “do I count the 28th?” or “wait, how many days are in January and December?” My brain sort of locks up, and with the pressure of having someone there watching me, my brain starts throwing out thoughts like “this person probably thinks I’m dumb,” which locks me up even more. When it comes to math, I don’t perform well under pressure.

I want to get into real estate, I want to break into the industry. I’m doing a lot of action faking now, just reading about wholesaling, and its moving parts. But as I struggle with mundane tasks such as listening to people talk to me, and simple mental math, it’s like I’m fighting an uphill battle, and those doubtful thoughts keep springing up: “how are you going to be a solid real estate investor if you can’t even follow mundane conversations, or perform mental math?” “If I’m going over a contract with a buyer or seller, and I keep zoning out, how the hell is this going to work?” And hundreds of other thoughts just like this I’m constantly fighting off. There are countless bright and sharp investors out there who do really well for themselves, and some not so well for themselves. What chance do I have of competing with them?

Great question, I have no idea. But I must figure it out. What’s the alternative, not getting into real estate because I feel I’m not smart enough?

I may be a F*cking social retard. I may have to read a contract 10 times just to get a very basic understanding of what the hell it means, I may lock up a bunch of times in a conversation, or have some seller repeat what they said three times to get what they mean (I’ll probably lose a lot of deals because of it), but I can’t give this up. Christ, I can’t give up on this. I’ve got too much of a long past of quitting to give up like I always do.

So, I’ve looked back and gathered three big things I have accomplished, three things that I have successfully committed to that I haven’t given up on (despite how much I may have wanted to). They aren’t much, but they’re something. They prove that I can commit to something through the good and the bad, and for now that’s got to be good enough.

I’m going to commit to this, and I’m going to get a deal. It might take me a while (one because I’m out at sea right now and won’t be on land again until the 9th of July), but I’m going to get a deal, and I’ll keep you guys posted. Anyone who reads this, you are my accountability. Don’t be afraid to ask me if I’m still F*cking off, or if I’m actually working towards my goals.

The point of all this is to simply tell you that whatever is holding you back from getting started, figure out a way to get past it. If you lack in brains, make up for it in persistence, or balls, or resourcefulness. It might take you twice as long to do something as someone “sharper” than you, but maybe you’re the guy who will stick it out that extra mile, when the smarter people are dropping like flies.

If I’m going to break into a field like real estate, you can break into whatever field you want to. But, everything I wrote today is completely void until I break into real estate. I’m going to prove it to you just so this post has credibility.

Message me if any part of this post rubbed your gonads in all the right ways.

Just throwing a new perspective into this already excellent thread...

What if Have was removed? What if we assumed there was nothing you could Have permanently? You either become, or you don't. You're wealthy, or not. You're an entrepreneur, or not. You're an athlete, or a slouch. You're a father, or a deadbeat. You're a philanthropist, or you're not.

Which is going to get you to your final destination... Do or Be?

OMG this is EXACTLY what I read on a Scientology's book some years ago (I have nothing against them, in fact the book itself was pretty useful)

Oh man this is almost me... I lived for almost 10 years in a s***** depression (and i'm 18 years old now). I am starting to get better, i almost finished the exams and i will be "free" from this school (never taught me ANYTHING, i always had to study at home, i really literally learned nothing in that school). As soon as this school ends, i will put 100% of my time on working hard.
But for me... It's even harder than normal people. I can't stop saying i suck, i can't stop looking at the mirror and almost puke, i can't stop thinking that i'm a total failure, that i suck in everything i do.. Even now that i'm writing this... I feel so much like i suck in english, and that's true. And yeah, math has been a problem for me too.
But luckily i got this insane motivation. So strong that almost made me disregard my social anxiety, my sadness and my hate for life. Desiring to be successful in life made me stop whining around and start searching on internet every thing i could search that could help me. I was even lucky enough to find after just a few hours the book TMF and this forum. Man i feel so lucky for the first time in my life... I am the only one in the range of 20km near my house that wants to be successful and that doesn't want to stay slave in a 9/5 job and doesn't want to work to live. I only told my mom about this desire, and i have been lucky enough to have a mom like that, she understood me at the end (After months of discussing, but she finally got it).
The only big fat problem i got here now is this: i don't know what to do. I have so much information yet i can't find a way to start. I want to help people but it's kinda hard here really, people don't trust you here(But maybe i found a dealership owner i could help)... I should go to university, but i don't know what faculty to take. I only have 1 month to decide or i'll have to wait a year.
But yeah, moral of the story: even with a big clinical depression, social anxiety and other psycho stuff, my motivation and aspiration to leave something to this world is so big that defeats even mental "problems".
Damn, I am so sorry for my bad english....

P.S
The first objective for now is learning web development so that i can "expand" my range of "helpfulness".

I can safely say, beyond being stuck, it was the reason why I failed and failed and failed. You know that saying about "watch your thoughts for they become words, watch your words for they become actions"? As MJ says, instead of saying - I will or I want to be, we have to believe we already are, because then the mindset becomes our reality.

When I used to read success stories from other people, I always wanted to know the how, and while that isn't a bad thing, I recognised that I needed the hand-holding-step-by-step before I took any actions, because of my fear to leap and my fear to fail.

To date, though I have faced many failures, I can say it is because I have acted AND failed that I have learnt some of life's most valuable lessons and I see how important it is to just do and make things happen.

I completed Unscripted about 3 weeks ago and I have already began applying the principles directly to my business, I'm just doing it and enjoying the journey along the way, sure it ain't some easy walk in the park, but this matters to me, I am an entrepreneur and I am proud of my progress.

Thanks for your post.

That used to be me also, and still struggling some times with it. It's easy to fall in Fake Action. BTW when I read biographies of successful people I'm only interest in auto-biographies, because it's in them where the autor exposes some of his/her beliefs and not only the how-to's.

I learnt this Being -> Doing -> Having proccess when I studied coaching, and was a big change in mindset for me. But it can be confusing at first. Is easy to fall in the trap of doing only possitive affirmations and things like that in order to BE before you can start DOING.

Being is something you achieve through first taken the decision and then start Doing, in a loop of Being->Doing->Being->...

Decide. Do. Analyze/Learn. Do again...

Each action you take will make your auto-image stronger and stronger, and that will rationalize your decision. The repetition is the key to build that BE. A Repeated action transforms you 1000x more than looking to you in the mirror repeating yourself that you ARE.

So BE and DO are not separable. It's like the egg and the chicken. Which was first?

Without BEing probably you are not DOing or you are doing in the wrong direction. Without DOing you never will BE.

I'm not saying anything new here. But I think may be useful for some people that are new to this kind of mindset and reading this can think "ok, so I need to BE before I canstart DOing anything." That was me time ago :D

EDIT: I've found a video by RSD regarding this topic that is Gold in my opinion. (go through the get women stuff and focus in the personal development background. It's quite profound)
