Who believes in you make your own destiny ? And who believes its just some peoples destiny to be rich or poor no matter how hard you try ? Or maybe its just luck in the people you meet in life and the friends you make. I would like to here from both the rich and soon to be just curious

I'll tell you who belives that- unsuccessful people. (Not just rich or poor because a measurment of someone's financial condition is just a snapshot in time- it's the mindset that is important). Why? Because successful people know that to be successful it means doing everything that those who aren't won't. It sure is a hell of a lot easier to blame destiny for one's lot in life than it is to examine habits, friends, expenses, etc. and continually work towards improvement.

Having a victim mentality is the beginning of the end.

I would still be in my same old job working my a$$ of to get a promotion had I not stumbled across one person. He was a person with a 6th grade education that had achieved financial freedom in his 40's without doing anything spectacular.

I saw his result, bought a book, and made my path from there. I really wish that I didn't wait until I was 39 to get started but... I am really glad that I did so at the age of 39. :icon_super:

I think that we all have good luck sometimes and bad luck some other times. Many people that get struck by bad luck believe that everything in their life is marked by bad luck and then they keep attracting tragedy to their life. The opposite is also true.

I do recognize that the surroundings and the economic environment do matter in all this. I see an incredible amount of opportunities every day in this country, and I did not see the same while leaving in a third world country. Probably the opportunities were also available there, but I just did not see them as I had a negativity cap on. I had already made up my mind that it was impossible to make it happen in those conditions. So I changed my luck by moving to a place where I believed I could make it happen.

I just read an article from Rick Warren (Purpose Driven Life Author). In the article he talks about his wife's terminal cancer, and that because of her illness he has redefined good and bad luck. He said that before her illness he saw life as a series of highs and lows, now he sees life more as a two sets of parallel tracks (like railroad tracks) - that as we go through life we experience both good and bad all the time- everyday. It's what we choose to focus on that matters. I thought that given his situation that was really powerful... and helped me reframe my perspective.

There is no such thing as luck. As someone else stated... luck is being prepared when the opportunity comes.

And opportunity does come to everyone - it might not be recognized by everyone, but it is there. For example - we have given Retire Young Retire Rich to many people. Some people were able to pick it up and run with the knowledge. Other people were not able to recognize the opportunity (knowledge contained in the book that was given to them) and continue to live life in the same way they always have.

Destiny? I guess I don't know what destiny means. "Destined" to be poor or rich? Absolutely not. Your life is what you make of it. No one lives the charmed life in which they are immune to bad things happening. It is what you do with those bad things that will shape your future.

I am a cancer survivor. As a result, I am not able to have any more children. I mourned my loss deeply. I gave up a calling (to be a midwife) because of the pain of my loss. But, I came out on the other side with a new appreciation for what I have and a new plan to be a foster parent.

My plan may be different as a result of my cancer treatment. I may have lost something I thought I would have... but my life is richer because of it. It opened doors that otherwise would not have shown themselves to me.

So... to anyone that feels they are trapped in a life of poverty I say, screw that. You have opportunities to change your life everyday. Open your eyes so that you see them, and then start taking action.
