I’m not sure if this is the right thread, but I’d like to reach out to people who are doing the kind of work/ running the kind of business I might want to pursue in the future. I’d like to ask about their experiences, since hearing from them would help me prototype whether this is something worth pursuing for myself or not. It is more of a thought experiment for me.
The problem is, I’m not sure how to phrase my question or what exactly to say. I reached out to some people primarily on LinkedIn and even though I explain upfront that I’m not asking for a consultation, trying to sell anything, looking for a job, or offering any “fake free” stuff, people usually don’t reply when I ask for just 10 minutes of their time to jump on a call.
How should I ask this in a way that makes people more likely to respond?
The number of 10-minute call requests I get on LinkedIn is ridiculous.
When I receive those requests, it makes me think people are selfish. If you’re not busy and are willing to be interrupted by a random stranger “just to talk” for 10 minutes, maybe that’s fine for you. But for those of us with packed schedules—juggling business, family, health, fitness, and hobbies—saying yes to even one “10-minute, but likely hour-long” call is a hard pass.
I ignore every single one without exception. I may sound like an a-hole to you, but if you want to talk to me, it won’t happen through a lazy LinkedIn request. You’ll have to put in the work to reach me. How?
Some people do enough research on me to make their outreach very personal. For example, they might reference a specific detail from my past or ask a targeted question without immediately requesting a meeting or call, just to get a reply. I can then choose a downtime when I have nothing better to do to “clean up my LinkedIn inbox” and respond to those.
Then, they consistently and patiently follow up two or three more times. Eventually, they might say, “Hey, I appreciate the time you’ve given me, and this may be a lot to ask, but could we grab a coffee sometime?”
At that point, I schedule them for a meeting three to six months out and tell them to contact me then. If they follow through, I feel they genuinely value my time and what I have to say, and I’m willing to give it. This process is my free way to filter out the fake flattery crowd that’s useless to me—and, frankly, I’m just as useless to them.
