Hello Fastlaner's, I work within a specific area of IT (Network Engineering) which involves a lot of studying and certifications to keep up with the current technology. One of the most popular certifications in IT is called the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA). It's an entry level certification but also one of the most difficult for many people trying to get their foot into the world of network technology. in order to pass this test you need to have a solid understanding of not only the theory but also know how to configure and setup routers, firewalls, DSL, etc in the real world.

Well I passed this test about a year ago now and just like many others it was hard to find examples of how you would set up networking hardware such as routers in a live environment like a small business for instance. It hit me like a ton of bricks last week that there's a ton of books on the theory but not enough study material to help you learn how to configure and deploy the networking equipment itself. I did a quick market survey by asking fellow techies in my niche if they would be interested on a few different tech forums. I received a very positive response and even some good words from guys who are pretty well known in the IT networking community.

To get to the point, my dilemma is that I'm not an expert in my field by any means yet. While I am experienced and have tackled the CCNA rather easily I feel as if it's not right to charge for a ebook about passing the CCNA exam since I'm not an expert in my niche yet. I was wondering if I could get some input on this? I was thinking I could give my first eBook away for free and depending on how that does I could charge for any other eBooks afterwards. The nice thing about my field is that there are a ton of exams that's always changing so I should never run out of material to right about that's relevant. I have a blog that's starting to pick up steam and I actually have an outline and everything created for the eBook. I'm just not sure how I should go about this opportunity, I look forward to hearing everyone's input!

Well i think you should do like this guy did with LEED Exams.
Take a look at his December income: My Monthly Report - December 2009 | The Smart Passive Income Blog
Also look at his LEED exams site: Green Exam Academy - FREE Online LEED AP Exam Study Guide Resource for LEED Green Associate GA LEED AP Specialty Exams LEED Prep

Here's a podcast on how he did it: How Pat Flynn Lost His Job Then Made $203,219.04 In His First Year Online - Entrepreneurs-Journey.com by Yaro Starak

Since you're an expert on CCNA maybe you could make it like this guy did...

there are many free articles. anyone who is sufficiently motivated can learn about it via free, just google. but yes, you should offer all your ebooks for free, information wants to be free! :D

Thanks all for the advice, I found a few great social networking sites where I was able to target the exact customers I was looking for. I'm actually starting to receive a ton of replies and requests for this eBook but now I'm coming to another dilemma! I think I'm going to need to create some type of Excel sheet or something for a mailing list. There has to be some better ways to create a mailing list without so much time consuming work organzing it in Excel though. I'm searching Google now for suggestions but has anyone on here created a mailing list before, any suggestions?

whew thanks for the advice guys, I have a simple mailing list on my blog and it's starting to build with a list of people interested. The amount of emails I'm receiving has increased at least 400% in the past few days. Honesty not a lot yet but I answered around 70 emails today compared to the 2 or 3 I would receive every few days. I'm working on a free version of my lab book which will offer 1/4th of the material of my actual book. I do want to give something back to the community that helped me achieve my certification so I feel the most comfortable doing it this way. I'll let you all know what happens next!

Yes off the first one as a promotion. If the first release is a home run and can plant the seeds, then I sure clients are willing to purchase any releases there on after.

Just a little update, my free eBook is almost complete and I'm working on getting a wordpress website up strictly for promoting the book. I'm still debating if the simple wordpress.com website will be enough or will I need to go the manual wordpress.org route. I am actually picking up momentum on my blog and I haven't did to much marketing yet still. I'm getting about 100 unique clicks a day and 30 return vistors a day. I've been using Google analytics to track my blog and I noticed that 30% of my hits are coming from search engine which is great to hear! It helped that I started this blog about a year ago and already had about 100 posts so I had a LOT of words for search engines to pick up but I'm not a SEO expert by any means.

I'm also wondering what I should do about a logo if any, I sent a proposal to a local guy through elance but the turn around time and the price $100-200 has me rethinking if I should wait and just focus on getting the product out. When I start to sale my eBook officially I think I can always go back and revise the site, brand, logo's ect. I just don't want to lose momentum focusing on one small piece of the puzzle but this may piece of the puzzle may be one of the most important pieces (the center piece lol)so I'm still debating.

I'm averaging about 30 new subscribers a day on my mailing list, my limit is 500 for the free mailing list i have so I may have to upgrade to a paid version in about 3 weeks I'll keep all of my fellow fast laners updated on what happens next!

(P.S. Is there anyway to rename this thread into a Progress Thread?)

A lot has happened since my last posting. I went ahead and bought the domain www.configurethenetwork.com. I then spent a little time figuring out how to incorporate wordpress into my website, using Godaddy's hosting made it pretty straight forward. Right now it's mainly a landing page BUT it does have the download to my free book. Thanks to building up a little buzz before releasing the eBook I was able to get about 200 hits in a matter of 2 days. I've been hearing good feed back about my book so far which is a good motivator to finish up the full version to sell!

Also for my logo I realized that my target audience didn't care if I had a dinosaur that could shoot lasers out of its eyes or a simple Times New Roman text for my design . So I got a little familiar with Photoshop and created a simple text cover for my eBook that does its job I believe. There's also a lot of work I need to do for my wordpress site so it doesn't look so generic looking. I've been doing research on internet marketing techniques that I plan on really getting into once I have the finally product finished which should be in about 3-4 weeks!

WOOHOO!!! I haven't posted a progress update in a while but I was still plugging away at my eBook, website, and marketing over the last few weeks. I made my FIRST online sale today I'm extremely happy and excited at the same time. I'm actually not even finished with my website yet and haven't really started marketing my product yet.

As of today there has been about 600 downloads of the free eBook that I offered. I actually cut down the amount of material in my free eBook by quite a bit and is instead more like a preview or teaser for what the full eBook has to offer. My target goal is to sell 2,000 copies in the next 6 months at $20 per copy. My next immediate goal is for me to sell enough copies to pay for an LLC ($500-700) for my company and to have it pay for a tank of gas for my car ($40).

The LLC I'm going to be forming is not only for my ebook but I also plan on diving deeply into affiliate marketing and I'm going to use the profits from my ebook to fund money for my affiliate marketing company!

Just a little update, it's been over a month now since my last post. I turned a profit from my work after about 2 weeks. I learned a TON about internet marketing since I first started this project. I'm constantly working on SEO techniques but for the most part this thing runs on auto pilot which is a great feeling! While this website is generating income for me, it has pretty much funded my affiliate marketing efforts which I'm still learning and implementing daily.

One of the best methods that helped me accomplish my goals so far is ACTION. What I do is create a mind map of what I want to accomplish, then I search on forums about how to accomplish that goal piece by piece. So I would learn just enough to accomplish my step and then implement it immediately. Then from my results rather it's a complete failure (I've had lots of failed attempts lol) or complete success, I make sure I learn why or why not my attempt worked the way it did.

I'm currently working on CPA marketing and haven't turned a profit yet but I'm learning a lot. Once I reach my goal with CPA marketing my next goal is to design, develop, and build my own niche web 2.0 sites. I want to be in the driver's seat in the fast lane promoting my own product, not the passengers seat promoting other peoples products forever :coolgleamA:.

This is exactly how I leaned to build a website. I'm about to finish up my first web app in 3 years and I built it via PHP -- a language I have no experience with.

Congrats and thanks for the update.

me too, I have been preaching it to folks on this forum looking for a developer, to really give it a try, and try learning on their own, and bootstrap instead of throwing thousands at some developer they know nothing about, but it mostly falls on deaf ears.

I got my first web app, and it's being built in PHP too, all of a sudden I need a whole bunch of Javascript and I had to pick that up, in the back end for my VOIP, I have to use Lua to script the VOIP part and I had to pick that up too. Just have two computers. One to work with, the other to google with, and anyone can do anything they put their mind to. One step at a time.

It's been months since I've last posted on my progress thread so I figured it was time for an update.

I ventured pretty deep into CPA for about a month and wasn't able to turn a profit or even break even. Now I knew this wasn't nearly enough time to know if CPA was something I could do well or even really understand what I was really doing. But it was a huge wakeup call for me with affiliate marketing. I learned that I truly do enjoy the concepts of online marketing. Mainly because it's competitive and you can see the results first hand if you're making progress, such as becoming #1 in a Google search results.

However, as I was doing this SEO and CPA marketing I was learning that I was not enjoying selling other peoples products as I just didn't care about nor 100% believe in theirs as I did my own e-book product. I could tell by the lack of effort I was putting into all these minisites and keyword researches. It bummed me out for a while because I liked online marketing but I never could find a product I cared about as much as mine.

So I took about a month break from anything online marketing related and focused on my career for a little bit while I brain stormed on what my next plan of action was going to be. As of now I recently received a new job offer (doubled my income!) which I'm using the extra income to help fund my new project. I've checked this forum everyday since then and I've read some very informative posts which helped me figure out that I need to focus on creating services or products that are 100% owned by me.

I didn't take long for me to think of my next project that I'm COMPLETELY excited about! Without giving to much away I'm creating a specific niche web directory that users will pay a monthly service fee to be featured on this site. I already have the wheels in motion and I will soon be posting the website once it's finished. I'm also doing something different and I'm outsourcing a lot of the projects (logo design, SEO, website) this time around which I know will save me tons of time. More updates to come soon!

I'm still chugging along! With my new job role and extra income I've been investing pretty much all of it into my student loan debt and the rest into my website project Saint Louis City Guide . Over the years I have become very interested with the history, present, and future of my home town Saint Louis. I decided to base something around this little bit of passion and create a city guide website. This is for sure one of the oldest money making types of websites in the online world but I found many short comings in areas that the other local city guide websites didn't have. Mainly more options and ways for a business to promote it's business under the listings section and ease of use to navigate city guide websites. It's fully integrated for use with Facebook, Twitter, and the customer can even upload promotional video's when they purchase my fully featured business listing plan.

I'm still in beta stages and I'm offering free listings for the first 10 businesses to help get the ball rolling and "fill out" the website. I have marketing plan in effect and I have a designer finishing up a WAY better looking header than the temporary one I currently have. I'm really not sure if my pricing is to low, I would love to hear what you all think about that or any other suggestions! The site should be live on November 1st, again the website is Saint Louis City Guide

Sorry that site has been created and I'm still selling on average 5 copies a month without any additional work on my end which is pretty nice, I call it my gas money. The website is CCNA Labs : Configure the Network

I forgot to mention that I'm drumming up a little business providing SEO services as well. I have one company so far that pays me a monthly fee to provide basic SEO services and that's been working out quite well also without to much work on my part as I found a pretty good group of people to outsource the work to while keeping the remaining profit.

Cool! Have you ever seen or used packet tracer? Cool learning tool

Free Download Packet Tracer 5.0 Full Version Dumps | Latest PassGuide Pass4sure Testking Testinside Actualtest Exams
(don't know if these are torrents)

Also, don't know if you know but Cisco has games to help CCNA candidates prep for the tests.

https://learningnetwork.cisco.com/community/connections/games

I'm not familiar whatsoever with bringing traffic to web sites but I would think that not too many people going through those classes know about tools like packet tracer (more interactive than boson) or the games and I would think they'd be grateful to have access to them.

I'm just brainstorming here but I wonder if it would be possible to license a version of pt so that maybe accounts could be set up on your page and practice networks could be built from your page using it?

Just a humble .02 from a stock trader!

Packet Tracer is a very cool tool indeed, I based my whole book around packet tracer! The only way to "officially" obtain packet tracer is to attend a CCNA class sadly. That's a neat idea though and I have the thinking cap going no on how I could possibly implement that simulation idea.

Thanks! And I'm sending you some rep speed too because I know what you went through to get that cert. Is the CCNP and CCIE on your list in the future?

For those reading this, Cisco Certified Network Associate exam is a very VERY difficult test to pass. ...You have no idea!
And, to forward that knowledge into an ebook definitely deserves some rep.

CCNP is a bear, the CCIE is a MONSTER! I was gearing up to take CCNP but I fell into the VoIP world with my last employer. So I shifted from full-fledged routing and switching to learning about telecommunications, PSTN, VoIP, and how they all correlate with each other. I plan on taking my CCNA:Voice by the end of December and then I'm going to move on to the CCNP cousin the CCVP (Cisco Certified Voice Professional). The nice thing about VoIP is that it's still new technology so there is a huge market and need for not only professionals that know it but also businesses that provide it. It's not uncommon for VoIP engineers to make 120-140K that have 5 or so years of experience.

I receive about 3-4 offers a month for VoIP engineer positions and I've only been at it for a year and a half! Also VoIP is a perfect candidate for creating a "managed service" type business around since not much new hardware is needed besides the actual phone and even that can be virtual (similar to an IM client that runs on your PC).

Have you had a chance to check out these games?

https://learningnetwork.cisco.com/community/connections/games

The slingshot one was a favorite as was the binary game. I liked the games because they were timed and having to set up a series of networks in a class c while timed can be a challenge!

Maybe you could also put games like these on your page?

Most everybody likes games and it's perhaps a good way to keep people on your site for longer periods of time?

...just a humble suggestion :)

A good friend of mine is a network security guy for a bank and he's not Cisco certified and he even failed the ccna but yeah, the industry is growing at an enormous rate and he's making 6 figures in his position.
