Is this common? How do we convert the guests into members? Hehe Some of them might already be members but too lazy to sign in??

I think we can give credit to Andrew's blog about the "20 Websites that Can Change Your Life" .... its probably being Digged and syndicated hence the boost in traffic/registrants. Im honored that we are included in quite a remarkable list. Thx Andrew!

Hey no problem. I'm very surprised that I'm driving this much traffic here.

How do you find what member number you are?

Also, do we have a link to Andrew's blog??

You can check out my blog here: http://www.lyved.com/ or the exact post here: http://www.lyved.com/life/20-websites-that-can-change-your-life/

It's pretty cool, you can "feel" the forum growing. Posts are appearing more frequently than ever before.

I just noticed that the most users on at one time was yesterday. From the bottom of the forum: "Most users ever online was 109, Yesterday at 02:05 PM."

What was the record before that? I never noticed.

There were like 30 or 35 registered users plus a bunch of 'guests'... lots of people reviewing the site, and then many more new users registered after that. I guess they liked what they saw. Andrew, your site DOES move traffic. Yesterday your page had 98 diggs when I checked it out.

Unfortunately, it appears we've already surpassed "Dunbar's number" of active users...

For reference:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunbar's_number

I'm OK with it. The same 30 or so people are the ones that keep the forum moving anyway. If I can maintain 'stable social relationships" with that group, I'll be fine.

And thanks for the reference, I just learned something else today!

Yeah, I think it's at 101 diggs but it never made it to the homepage, but that's okay. I've received more traffic from Stumble Upon and Del.icio.us than digg.

JScott, you never cease to amaze me.

This "magic number" was used in "The Tipping Point" and to be honest I thought it originated with the author.

Based on The Tipping Point, I really try to limit organization size/meetings to 150 people. It does start fragmenting after that.

I'm not sure how that works virtually though.

Just to give everyone a little FYI about how things have gotten a wee-bit ridiculous. The last 10 users that have joined, 6 are suspected spammers and 4 have been banned immediately. This is not encouraging.

Sorry to hear this. Is this a normal part of growth in this business? I am sure it takes the fun out of seeing it grow.

Its like having a party at your house and everyone that comes tries to steal from you. I'm constantly throwing people out of the party "Here's the exit". As I write this, another user joined, another ban.

I'm sure it's very frustrating for you MJ.

But, to be honest, it's a learning experience for me (and I think others on the site). Why do you think this has started to happen? How can you tell a spammer from someone else?

Other than keeping our eyes open for spam threads/posts, is there anything we can do?

JScott, good idea.

Could you put some sort of strict clause in the User Agreement for posting banned material (especially when it's the first post) that is agreed upon by all users when they sign up? Unfortunately, people don't really read them much, though.
