A kid died recently because he wanted to post the speedometer on his car going 100mph+

Let that sink in for a moment.
it's still sinking in...

The only reason I created a facebook account was for advertising. I don't use facebook at all.

Instagram - I use it to promote my businesses.

Social media, like TV, is a complete waste of time.

While facebook can be definitely a bad thing,

It can also be a good thing.
It is, after all, the cheapest way to contact home when I'm travelling over the world and have bad internet.

And it is simple enough so that my mother understands how it works.

That being said:

Discipline is all, an undisciplined mind can make any tool into a bad thing.

I use it to contact home, find out things that I need to know (Like yesterday, I got an emergency call back to a ship since they're understaffed. and through facebook my future boss noticed my post, now I know who I work with, what to bring, what I can leave at home(more space in the bag, Yey!))

And now also as another way to communicate with customers, get some extra free advertisement/sales for my own company.

I just put one up but don't ever check it or post. I treat it like a linked-in. Its just there so other people don't feel indifferent. When I see someone brag about their dinner or their trip I assume that they are just attention whores. Seriously, who hasn't sat on a beach on the gulf coast of Florida or down in Ft Lauderdale... do some real travelling.

I find that the people who I respect the most post the least.

Has anyone noticed how strict the new FB algorithms are for organic likes on your business page?

Out of 3000 "likers" my posts(non-paid) are only reaching 200-300 people.
I am using literally everything FB claims helps organic reach(Links, shares, original pics, keywords, hashtags, 20 sec vids, etc).
Basically I can't reach the majority of my own page's fans without paying for them or so it seems after their most recent updates in the algorithm...

On a non-business side, secret groups are actually really cool for groups of friends. It's a way to weed out all the soccer moms and elderly who over share.

Why experience something live and in 3D? When you can replay it flattened and in 2D?

We're becoming slaves to our smartphones, prostituting life's rich experiences for likes, comments, and social media shares.

The image saddens me.

Social media is just people trying to impress others, but they don't want to admit it.

If I ask anyone on there, why do they tweet, post pictures, videos, etc. They would say some bs like " I do it for myself."

Then I tell them ask them why don't they just have a private account only for them. & Oh boy, Once I say that, the bull shit responses comes in.

Social Media has it pros and all, but I believe people use it to show off instead of "connecting."

i haven't changed my profile pic from around three years, and i hardly go on facebook anyway, but at the end of the day though we are moving into the machine age with drones and stuff like so we are likely to lose our human interaction and stuff like that but it's all apart of evolution from my standpoint.we are slowly turning into robots scientist predict that in the next 100 years billionaires can live forever, due to the advanced technology they can afford to buy, but i kinda agree with you though because we are slowly losing our human interaction and our connection with our mind, body and soul which is a bad thing.

I agree, I hate going to concerts where everyone is recording, texting and updating ... Watch the bloody show! I'd love to have a cell phone jammer and see folks faces when their phones not connecting to the web

Most people don't even want to impress people, they really do it for themselves.
They want likes. Validation of their opinion.

In other words, most people are just jerking their egos off.

Anyway to branch out? As tempting as it is I don't want to rely on FB for building an audience. Primarily because I know it won't last forever and once it goes down, your business will go down with it.

I have never had a FB account, but when I used to do computer forensics, I saw numerous lives changed due to hacked accounts and fake accounts.

Digging through all the artifacts and dealing with FB legal people, I never wanted to join the fan club.

People most definitely share to much information about themselves but thats their mistake for us to profit off of. Facebook is not stupid most people who use it are.

It's been an ok feeder channel for art sales, but I have an unfair advantage. Pictures are the most popular type of post, and I sell pictures.

Statistically, email subscribers are still clicking through a lot more.

Yeah I never post anything on my Facebook. I still keep it so I can see random events that I get invited to, keep in touch with certain people, and even to network within the internet marketing community. But if I go on vacation- I never post a pic of it. If I get a picture of me with a hot girl- never post a pic of it. Me doing anything cool- never post a pic of it.

Facebook is strictly a way for people to compare themselves basically these days and make certain "impressions" on other people, and I'm so over that so I give it no personal use basically.

Most of my internet time from my smartphone is spent reading here :) actually changed my default home page to this forum just so I can get to it faster when I'm stuck somewhere with only my phone.

But I agree with you. It's like I told one of my friends recently: the internet is full of knowledge. You can literally learn just about anything by searching for it. Sadly, everyone either spends it watching cat videos or , ya know, porn. It's the instant gratification, I call it investing in ignorance.

Another thing I noticed a while back was how everyone on social media is a model now or a "CEO" of some bullshit.

I took the only logical route - stopped paying attention to news feeds on social media.

I remember seeing my girlfriend using her phone recently, the hand gestures were unmistakable: swipe up, double tap, swipe up, double tap. It was like automation! I wanted to impose my opinion on her at first, but realized she has to listen to me talk about TMF and FLF all the time so I let it be.

I spend 85% of my day (almost everyday of my slowlane job) as a Remote Technician at my computer, staring at a screen (which does suck), but it also taught me much about being focused (not straying to random time-wasting websites while waiting for customers to connect to me), which I'm very thankful for. Also, another positive part about my slowlane job, is that people connect with me, explaining what problems they need fixed all the time. It's incredible how much hands-on insight this job has given me in terms of knowing how people use their computers/tablets/smartphones/social media/apps every single day, along with involved issues they frequently face (I've made a LOT of notes).

With social media, some people I talk to hate it, others will only use it to contact family, use it to play games, and most (the young generations) will use it frequently for just about anything. Younger generations who grew up with technology such as the internet, never knew (or did not live long enough in) a world without being able to obtain information instantly, or connect with anyone anywhere in the world in no time at all.

In terms of privacy, the younger generation and computer illiterate mass are used to jamming that "accept" button for TOS changes and/or for installing applications -- It's second nature by now, modern day 'Pavlov's Bell'. Agreeing to TOS simply means 'Carry on using this beloved software that is useful to you' for most people. Even if they know the application violates certain privacies, most people are unaware of how violating it is, or are completely unaware of these violations to begin with (to the same degree of people who repeatedly click "Next" throughout any software installation without reading, and end up agreeing to/installing malware on their computer). Everyone wants useful things right now and usually do not care to read about the consequences.

Those that do care, won't end up with malware, but they also won't end up reaching large companies such as facebook due to being drowned out by the collective mass that don't care (enough) about invasive privacy changes.

Whether we like it or not, this has unfortunately become apart of our society. Company policies change, users are warned of these TOS changes, and mostly do not give a damn.

A while back, I was meeting with a client. I realized that their office was just down the street from a friend's place of business, so I called him up and invited him to lunch. At lunch, he says "You know, you and I are dinosaurs." I looked at him quizzically and he continued, "Most people nowadays would go to lunch separately, take a picture of their food, and post it on each others Facebook page."

Never had one, probably never will. My wife has one for her TV show, but that's apparently a defacto industry requirement these days.

Cheers,
O-2

It can be useful to drive traffic and garner attention.

I have used it before for business, simply posting advertisements and my contacts and lo and behold after 6 months or more I did land one big sale, also got a lot of leads off it. Leverage it for its value and utility. I'm sick of the usual crap that goes on on most peoples feeds but you do get to see the trends of what consumers are into etc.
I will deactivate my account with my real name soon and use one with a pseudonym for work and biz purposes.

Facebook rather started as a social experiment but the acquisition perspective hit people at an alarming rate. Increasing online users, is by itself showcasing a bigger picture and they are blindly capitalizing on every opportunity that involves people in socially-digitized way.

Evolution of social media from primitive channels is becasue of the changed communication behavior globally. It is one of the permanent tabs open in my browser, phone.

I used to use Facebook a lot more than I do now. Before, it'd be to catch up with friends and keep in touch, but it'd also be to debate with people.

But now I just use it to keep in touch. I'm quite pleased with myself that I can see someone post something political, religious, or about current events, and I can simply pass over it in relative apathy.

Edit: That said, I still keep Facebook as a blocked site when I'm working, along with this forum, and a few other places.

I'm dating this chick that spends aaalll her time on Instagram and Snapchat...while I watch her glued on her smartphone..I tell her..."I wonder what would happen if you actually spent all that time, energy, and creativity on building a business...you'd be rich in less than 5 years!"

scares me with Twitter lately.. all the bad press, CEO leaving and seems they are lost..

what if you built your business around using twitter... I can't see them remaining viable much longer unless they do something dramatic..

anyone even still use Twitter?
