Which revenue model is better?

I'm putting together an idea for a site that could potentially have a large audience, in a very niche market.

The one thing I'm unsure of is which revenue model to use. The adsense ads route, or the paid subscription. Both have their good qualities as well as bad. I know people have made great money through adsense but I'm not particularly a fan in this example because as it's said around here, you're not driving the car, you're just a passenger. I know google's not going anywhere....but if they did, all your revenue goes bye bye. I'd like something I can control myself which is why I'm leaning the paid subscription route. Which then limits me to using no adsense ads.

Any suggestions? Different ways to look at it? Overall just looking for the best revenue model for better potential growth.
