I read a book about a year ago called "Choose Stocks Wisely" by Paul W. Allen- It is a book about analyzing the balance sheet in order to find value stocks. About half the book describes his own personal strategy, and the other half teaches you how to read and analyze financial statements, specifically balance sheets. I found it really helpful, and I still refer to it whenever I am trying to find/analyze new stock picks.

Analyzing a stock is different from analyzing a company... but since you mentioned deal number's I'll have to take a guess that it's the latter. Understanding the financials of the company is important. If you learn the basics of financial accounts - you should be able to look at any balance sheet and income statement and make sense of it - but before that, you have to learn accounts. I think Warren Buffet suggested this somewhere... it's the language of numbers, learn what the numbers mean and you'll learn the story of the company. He spends quite a bit of time studying Annual Reports... so if that's the case and you're willing to put in some effort... head over to http://www.accountingcoach.com/
