What improved your life so much that you wish you did it sooner?

Saw this question on Reddit and thought it was a pretty thought-provoking question that may lead to some interesting answers.

It can be whatever in any aspect of your life, both big and small things.
self improvement.

I was on a "self-improvement journey" for about 2.5 years.
Total waste of time.

Most of the habits that these self-improvement influencers preach online are action-faking.

The best way to improve is to take action towards one's goals.

Well, I dont drink alcohol anymore but i’d rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy.

here's what is under self improvement
1. reading( books like millionaire Fastlane , psycho cybernetics )
2. Meditation - be presentfull
3. Get proper sleep - 7 -9 hrs. (depends on people)
4. Do the hardwork especially when you don't feel like it.
5. maintain a good mental health
6. Fitness.

when you follow these according to my experience i don't get distracted now directly can go into a deep work state, Honor , respect comes on command. I am at my peak of many things except for finance for now gonna focus on work
Those are good.

In a way the things we do are quite similar, just different approach.
I don't call what I'm doing self-improvement, I rather call it goal-focused lifestyle.
(because my daily life is built around reaching my goals, while cutting out all the non-essentials)

Goal: physically fit body
Actions:
1.consistent sleep schedule
2.consistent gym routine
3.eating healthy every day

Goal: financial freedom
Action: work every day (entrepreneurship)

and so on for the rest of the goals...

  1. 2-3x daily Meditation / Mindfulness Practice
  2. Stoicism, Zen & Buddhism Philosophies (NOT the religious aspects)
  3. "programming my brain" for 20-30 minutes at the start and end of everyday with content I control aka YouTube University of watching channels like VYBO, Motiversity, Absolte Motivation, Impact Theory, etc...
  4. Deleted FB/IG accounts several years ago, productivity went up 500% easily
  5. Applied for residency + live full-time overseas to reap tax benefits on US earned income
  6. Installed "Motivation" chrome extension, Current Age Counter. When I open a new browser tab it tells me my exact age and I watch the number increment higher = motivation not to waste time.
  7. Betting on myself. Corporate life = 3-4% raise a year. Controlling my own destiny = 2-3x my income every few years. Not to mention exponential growth in free time, health & happiness.
I am really interested in 3. Programming your brain. What have you learned so far and what are the best practices on how you can achieve that?

Thanks for the tip!

As far as I know, my sleep quality is fine (I meditate most nights before bed... the only things that mess it up are stress and alcohol). But if the stat is that high, I'm probably in that 80%. I'll have to look into that!
What's your meditation process please? You just lie down flat and close your eyes for as many minutes as you want or something? I have tried doing what I just asked you blindly and I haven't quite seen any difference. Is there another way?

I've got a pretty cliche response but it is something over the last year that I've come to realize and internalize deeply. I think the most important thing you can do is stop measuring your success up to others. I've done this throughout my childhood and early adulthood and it likely has cost me happiness and focus. Happiness because it is impossible to live up to others' standards - everyone is given a unique set of advantages and circumstances in life - and focus because I have been looking outside myself instead of within.

I highly recommend measuring your success by your own standards and respecting your own unique advantages and disadvantages.

Play the hand you've been dealt and stop peaking over at others' hands so to speak.

If I had internalized this earlier I'm sure at the very least the last 20 years would have been filled with much less regret.
I appreciate you for dropping this "pretty cliche responses". I had to copy it out into my note and even read and recorded it. Now I listened to it like a Motivational speech. You saved a life. I'm forever grateful.

I'm considering selling my gaming PC and just using my MacBook so I can't game anymore..

That can be a good idea, but beware of just moving the problem

For instance I know that when I don't smoke weed, I don't want to play video games. But instead I still spend too much time scrolling FB or surfing the net.

It can be good to supress distractions, but often discipline is better

Maybe try to uninstall all your games first ?

That’s like saying keep beer in the fridge. But don’t drink it to build your discipline. When it’s way better just to never let that beer enter your fridge, if you have some. Dump it. Why waste willpower?

Because willpower is a muscle. I think it's better ton control oneself over temptations than to suppress all of it.

Because otherwise what will happen when you get beer again ? You'll get drunk af.

But to be honest I'm still trying to unf*ck this so maybe you're right, I still have the sensation that my willpower is a volumetric tank.

Maybe the best is to begin by suppressing and then build discipline.

Out of site, out of mind :). I like to think willpower is finite, and if you use it to avoid video games… you have less to use for other boring things related to your business that you need willpower.
Also, you just don’t buy beer again… if you have a problem, you need to view this as your quitting for good. If you say “I’m just cutting back so I can I have 1 beer and be fine” you’re playing yourself.
It’s not harsh, it’s just a mental position you need to adopt if you have an addiction.
Your no longer a drinker when you have your last drink :)

Dude I'm 20 years old and I have a similar mindset. I don't regret past actions or look back on them with "I should have" or "I shouldn't have" because I view every positive or negative thing I've had in my life to be learning experiences. I do my best to prevent myself from making the same mistakes over and over again, and I have enough knowledge to not take part in certain activities that Mr. Demarco would label as "DAREs." Still, it's nice to see someone with that mindset.
There is neither good nor bad in the universe, there just “is”… up to you how you respond to it! :)

Martial Arts.
I have been liftin weights since the age of 17, but If I knew how incredible martial arts are for Self confidence, character building, general toughness and personal development, I would have started sooner.
I am talking specifically about striking, Kickboxing Boxing and Muay thai.
Wrestling would also be a banger, other than that I am not a big fan of BJJ, yes its very effective in sports competition, but for general toughness, learning to take punches and kicks to your head and beeing comfortable with it is just like a superpower.

Reading The Surrender Experiment by Michael A Singer

Given me some surreal peace at a time when I was getting stressed by something quite normal.

Saw the title last year but thought I could do without it.

Might have mentioned this somewhere in the thread, but, a standing treadmill and a desk, to compliment the normal desk.

As they say, sitting all day is today's 2 packs of cigarettes per day.

Just bought one 1 week ago and it's very good for people that work on computers all day (mandatory to use with a standing desk too)

@MJ DeMarco I work standing most days, or when I'm tired I sit on a swiss ball. Been thinking of adding the treadmill, how have you enjoyed it so far?

Do you use it for burning calories, or what's the rationale behind the treadmill?

Because sitting all day is bad. And it is starting to have a negative impact on my life. Dropping down to the gym for an hour doesn't fix 8 hours of sitting.

So now I walk a good part of the day and it has raised my caloric intake as well resulting in better fitness.

Is it not hard to type when walking on a treadmill? I have trouble typing sometimes if I move around a bit at a standing desk. I imagine a moving floor would be way harder.

How long do you try to use it instead of sitting 8 hours ? I try to use it in 30-60 minutes increments at least 2 hours and then I alternate between sitting and standing

I tend to do work that requires less mental load. I can't do "deep work" on the treadmill.

I can't do those curved monitors anymore. I can say that those stand up desks are worth it.

Eventually I'll get a new one. Don't like thr cranked versions. Electric is the way to go.

He's a Mac user. Blasphemy!

They can be such a pain to troubleshoot for the work environment I'm in right now.

Windows FTW.

Troubleshooting process for Mac:
1. Open Window
2. Grab MacBook
3. With vigorous force, chunk it out the window.
4. Congratulations you have troubleshooterd a MacBook.

Along these same lines, years ago I got this app Pocketsmith. Basically a cashflow projection for personal finance.

I just put all my recurring charges in there, all my recurring paychecks, and set a budget for the non-recurring things, and then boom, I can see exactly what my cash will be on a day to day basis
I'll look into this, at the moment I use Personal Capital.

Its a great way to see all transactions bot only from a day to day perspective. But for past years as well.

I'll check out pocketsmith. Maybe it could replace my Excel sheet I use to keep track of my Fixed bills.
