Here is little story about a somewhat lazy, somewhat ignorant IM guy.
My main money site crapped out about 4/2010 due to some stupidity on my part. I left it go for some time and then the past 6 months or so have been back linkbuilding like crazy.
I track the site on 4 keywords. 2 would never get above the bottom of page 2 and 2 would never get above page 6.
During this time, when I would log into my site I would get a 404 or 500 error every few pages I loaded. I thought this was just a nuisance to me and affected nothing else, so I did nothing about it and did not bother to look into it.
The I launched my SEO Test and noticed that the 1 site in the test that was hosted on this host had only 1 or 2 pages indexed by google where the other 4 had about 20. To be fair to the service assigned to the dog host, I felt I needed to research this.
long story short, or longer maybe, my host assigns ram per user, not account, but user in the account. and I get unlimited users. My user get 16mb of ram and I was using at times 42 mb which was causing apache to crash.
I added a few users last night and moved stuff around. So back to my old main money site...... in less than 24 hours, all 4 terms are on page one according to my browser and seoserp.com. Scroogle is showing gains, but not page 1, I hear they run a bit behind, not sure. I changed nothing but improved my hosting situation.
So the cost of crappy hosting? (not really the hosts fault, but the affect was the same), 2 to 4 page penalty in google.
