It's kind of a coincidence that a lot of you here are into web development.

I started to do forum designs for over 10 years now. I worked for a competitor of this software that powers this site (which I dread ). I was laid off from the job without any notice right before pesky taxes, and never filled out estimated quarterlies like a good boy should. I jumped to starting my own design business. I probably had about a week off before I started to work again.

It will be 1 year in March that I started this. I've had some decent success, but it's slow lane when you have to do the work yourself. I started to buckle down my finances, saving like a mad man, no vacation for this year. For my first year of business I probably had 4 weeks worth of actual vacation, explains lack of savings.

I will make this topic just my progress and any ideas I may have.

I want to turn my current operation into me more managing the business instead of doing the work. I've narrowed down projects quotas I must hit to 'break even' and outsourcing the rest. Well, I did take on a new guy who agree'd to help me out and take some of the load off. I'd be making about 50% mark-up from it.

I'm kind of hesitant to do this as I won't be making as much in the start. BUT, it will give me time to market the company more and come out with new services and products.

I also don't want to be dependent on a software company, because if something happens so does my business. There for I have another business idea that involves starting out my own design firm in my local area... BUT, thought it would be a good idea to focus on what I have now.

Right now I am also improving my skills and getting hands on experience. Outsourcing is just so hard in my niche as I can only target people who are familiar with the software.

I guess I am trying to jump to the next level, but having problems doing so... I'm to the point where I have enough business I could have someone take on some of it.
