I preface this with the following. I've been involved with the internet since before there was such a thing (think Genie, AOL for DOS, etc.) for well over a decade.

During all this time, I have NEVER ever clicked on a 'banner ad' as they used to be known, nor their AdWords flavors, no matter how targeted they seem.

My question: WHO IS clicking on these, if anyone, and is anyone making real money at it?

I click on them and find it interesting what people/companies are selling.

There are several threads here about sites making money just by having ads.

PlentyOfFish.com (claims $xxx,xxx/mo)
WhateverLife.com (claims $70,000/mo)

The revenue model is ads that people click on.

I make a large portion of my internet revenue from google adsense. Yes, people do click on ads. Not all people do, but most of them do. In general, if they don't find what you're looking for on your site, but an ad looks appealing to them, they will click on it.

I buy internet advertising; lots of people click on them. Anyone making significant amounts of money online is involved in advertising in some way -- be it collecting advertising dollars (Google), producing advertising technologies (Aquantive being purchased by Microsoft for $6 billion), or leveraging massive audiences to drive them to a profitable website.

The internet remains one of the best ways for companies to reach their target audiences. Its practically instant (I can have a new advertising campaign live in 3 hours from scratch, try that with TV or print), you get detailed data that can be immediately adjusted to increase performance, and online audiences are super targeted (print & TV have huge media waste, why do I need to see a Viagra ad 100 times?)

So does it work? You bet it does -- both for buyers and sellers.

I suppose I should be surprised :) OK we have plenty of clicks, anybody ever actually follow thru and make a purchase? I am still trying to figure out if this whole ads thing is a bubble economy or a real one.

It's real. You just have to do lots of testing. First you have to test, test, test your ads to see what people will click on to get to your site. Then you have to tweak and test, test, test your site to see what it takes to get people to make a purchase or "conversions" as they are called.

No matter what method of advertising you use, the company you use to handle the advertisements will have a method of tracking the various percentages, as far as clickthrough rate (CTR), conversion rate, eCPM, etc etc. Unless you build your own advertising network of course.
