The only problem I have with this argument is that when the old obsolete technology was replaced by new technology in this case cars replacing the horse drawn carriage the new technology still needed just as many if not more people involved to produce this new technology. What happens when humans become the obsolete technology and robotics and artificial intelligence cannot only do everything humans can do but they can do it better in every way? Also, industries change. It sucks in the short term for longshoremen that lose their job. I get it. That isn't an excuse to stiffel innovation. That is like saying, we should have prevented the car from being made to make sure the horse barns, leather and saddle makers, horse feed companies, and the wagon companies stayed in business.
Both AI and robotics are progressing at an extremely rapid pace. People tend to look at the progress of this technology in terms of how they are today and make large claims like “hey this technology cannot replace me yet.”
Perhaps not yet but what about in one years two years or five years time when we have rapidly progressed the efficiency and effectiveness of both AI and robotics?
What happens when large segments of the population begins losing their jobs and careers because they have been replaced by robotics and AI? Do you feel that will have some sort of drastic affect and lots of consequences on the economy and our society?
We are in for some very interesting changes in the near future as well as some grave challenges and I’m not sure that we as a society are ready and capable to come together and tackle these new unique experiences that will plague us all.
