Travel Start up Funding

I looked at few fairly new start ups from the travel industry like Room 77 or Hipmunk and the amount of money they get from investors is unbeliveable! One got over $14 million the other almost $5 miliion! How can you compete with them?! Not to mention they have people with tons of experience from Orbitz or Expedia etc.
I wonder where the money is going? Do they pay for advertising that much or hire the best developers or go on very expensive business trips?

I guess my advantage is when I make my first million it will be all mine. No sharing with investors:hammertime:
